Remington NPSS downgrade from Benjamin Trail

I just received my NPSS (U.S.A. made) I was planning to send to Ed for tune and unfortunately I was dissapointed. I purchased this rifle because I thought it would be an upgrade from the Benjamin Trail NP (China made) thatI was so impressed with how quiet it was, but here is what I received from Pyramid Air. This is my second rifle arriving with cosmetic defects (not the fault of Pyramid since the packaging was excellent). It seems retailers need to look at their inventory before it goes to customers) My prior rifle was the TX200 less than a month ago.

Rifle grinds when you break the barrel. I did not fully cock because I didn't know if something would get damaged in fully cocking it.
Rifle has a scratch and the workmanship of the plastic is like ordering a cheap 99 cent radio with plastic flakes on it.

Anyone have any other suggestions for something comparable; especially being quiet?

Having seen the "carbon fiber" finish on others made me get the digicamo. The wrapping looked cheesey which made me think twice. As for the grinding you hear put a drop of pellgunoil on the pivot point and work it a few times...the grinding noise will disappear. As for the scratch, that I can't help you. Since you seem unsatisfied with your order you have every right to call Pyramid and voice your complaint. Ask them to send you a prepaid label to send yours back and request a replacement PRONTO. I have no excuse for your dissatisfaction which should be forwarded to Pyramid. Crosman I hope your viewing this post. I am sure there's no such thing as perfection, but let's not degress to Gamo's status

This is your third return? If you weren't happy with a TX200 and a trail, why do you think the NPSS with an applied finish would be better? Retailers don't have the time to open and inspect their merchandise before shipping and normally will not unless specifically requested. One doesn't ask to examine the contents of a newly purchased TV before taking it home, and I'm sure some of those have defects as well. Lets not throw the baby out with the bathwater.

i believe mike melick at dragon airguns/best airguns  inspects every one of the guns he sells ;before he ships them,of coarse he,s not as big as p/a,or crosman,but just thought i would let you know....sorry for your bad luck on the 3 guns you have gotten now;good luck on the next one.,oh and check out hatsan air rifles, they got some nice ones too.

Leadhead, thanks for letting me know about the pellgunoil. I'm just not too keen on the camo and wanted it in synthetic black or wood.

pv, actually the Benjamin Trail was fine. I was just expecting better quality from the NPSS. Only the TX200 was blemished.

Call PA...They will do whatever it takes to satisfy you...I returned 2 Hammerli 850's that I was not satisfied with, no questions asked...

My new XL creaked and made grinding noises, it even fetched up once. It all went away after the break-in period of 200-300 shots.

NPSS in Camo
Whisper Nitro Deluxe (I gave my whisper to my brother)
Stoeger 20SS; upgrade with Nitro

Any comment on these?

1ST GUN HAD A BEND BARREL OUT OF THE BOX. 2ND GUN Had the same grinding and binding when cocking AS YOU HAVE SAID. Crosman said they had issues with contaminated lube. Tore the Gun down and sure enough metal was in the gun. Piston was rubbing the Np and the upper part of the recever. Cleaned and debured and lubed and is fine now. Just been waiting on a piston seal from them for months. They keep sending me the wrong seals. 1st was the trail seal and then a lost shipment and then 2 nd seal was for an XL. Got the Rem. ones hopefully coming by SNAIL MAIL. PA or Crosman will take care of you needs. Crosman is by far willing to help and make you HAPPY. My RPN 22 is now a tack driver. GOOD LUCK.

The carbon look finish will at some point start coming loose just like the camo. I have done a custom job paint job on mine and so far it has held up and did the same on my Trail.

Let me start by saying I own a Benjamin Trail NP in all weather and it is a nicely put together rifle.  There are some accuracy issues with many of these rifles, but I have a good one.  A friend of mine purchased the NPSS.  It feels like trash compared to the Trail.  Painted or applied finishes never hold up well. 

As for quality control, I agrees 100%.  Crosman has some serious issues in that regard.  I had to send back my first Benjamin Marauder due to a broken screw hammer stroke adjustment stew.  It was not a new rifle though that is what I purchased. 

PA h pretty good customer service when you get a hold of them.

shouldnt have to be sending back lots of stuff if there  was quality control. a diffrent gun completely i bought a stevens single shot lever gun in .17 hmr .it had a too large chamber dealer sent it back,they fixed it all right looked like they used a punch too big to remove the pins out of the action and still had too big a chamber i requested my money back and was told i expected a higher priced gun for what i paid.my reply was the older guns were looked aat and checked befor shipping ,and by the rate of exchange i actually paid almost double for the gun compaired to 25 years ago. but seriously why is everything junk when we get it

I understand how you feel - exactly.  I own an NPSS and a Trail NP.  Each are superb guns once you get the bugs worked out.  My first NPSS from Airgun Depot developed a grind and a spray after 1000 rounds.  The replacement that came from Crosman had a stock that looked like yours.  The third one that came from Crosmane had a severely bent barrel.  The fourth one that came from Crosman had a severely bent cocking lever and ground as a result.  Once they sent a new lever, it was perfect, and today shoots .35" groups at 40 yards consistently.  My final choice was dressed in the digital camo and looks perfect.

The Trail NP cam from Pyramid Air.  The stock looked as yours did.  Crosman shipped me a new stock that looked just as bad.  On the second shipped stock, they got it right, and it looked good.  The Trail NP shoots just as well as the NPSS and it's internals were very well done. 

My thoughts are that both are very well designed guns.  I also feel Crosman has superb customer service and they are trying hard to make things how they ought to be.  I found them a pleasure to work with on each purchase, and never even bothered with the retailer.

I love both guns.  Each is smooth cocking & shooting, and incredibly accurate at long range for a break barrel.

AGREE!!! Once you get a good one or fix the bugs, these guns are great for low power, quite and accurate guns. A pleasure to shoot.

So, does that mean there are good ones in carbon fiber black; no flakiing? I may take the "Camo", if I could find a good one.

There again there are good ones. As mentioned, most of the syn. stocks that have any coating on them will fail at some time. The black is not a coating. You can always paint the syn. stocks to you desire. Many good paints out there that will bond to these stocks. I would not worry about the stocks. Been painting syn. stocks ever sense they came out many years ago.

The NP riffles are seriously well designed guns. I found Crosman to be very fast and sincere in thier response to my needing help with them. I have no regrets about owning either and would buy another in a heartbeat... already thinking about a Titan or XL.

 To be honest  i don't like the nitro pistons, i had a trail i sent it back was tired of fussing with it, even after i installed the grt 111 trigger ( awesome by the way)
 they claim 900 in .22 but you don't get that with the regular trail you get only around 735  in a .22
 the Benjamin Xl now using 14.3 grn gets  get close to that  they avarage 901 fps in .22  but they claimed  1100 i believe.
 heres  the thing i m o
  look at that beautiful Teck force 89  in .22  it croneys at 780. fps using 14.3 grn un tuned out of the box beautiful wood and checkering deadly accurate  deadly..
 now you properly tune that and that will shoot faster and be very smooth .

 Even the crossman venom all wood .22 nitro piston was a dud weak avarage fps in 14 . 2 grn was around 600 fps  give or take i sent that back.
 the xl piston is larger and will not fit regular rifles i tried, i wound up installing a piston from a regular Benjamin  trail into my optimist ok that was cool

 but honestly i rather have the power and the smoothness of a properly tune spring powered rifle getting  all the fps  out of it. 
 MY RWS 350 has the vortex tune kit it cocks and shoots like glass like butter super smooth

Well, I ordered the Camo NPSS and it looks much better cosmetically, but still grinds when you cock; sent to Ed (Shadow) for a tune.

Great choice. You wont regret it.  I love mine.  Shoots 740fps with field target specials into .30" groups at 25 yards.
