I'm thinking about ordering a QB 57, and I'm having a hard time. Do I want a .177 or a .22 cal. ? What do you think ?Which one would you get and why ?

I have a .22 (550 fps) but I think the platform is better suited to .177. It is not a high-powered long ranger and probably would shoot a .177 very flat.

Thanks Dave, I've read some good things about the qb57's. Some of the mods the guys do look really great too. I need to learn as much as I can and this should be a good one to play with.

Gene did a pimped out tactical one that was a beauty- you might have to search the Old GTA to find that thread, but it had enough SWAT bling to satisfy anyone.

They are easy to tear down and work on, and definitely benefit from a little cleanup. I should dig mine out and shoot it some more, biggest problem was the cheesy Powerline scope I had on it. It was a decent little shooter.

The .177 does shoot very flat at 20-30 yards and is a very good cheep plinking/ Project rifle.

I have EZmann's pimped out tactical QB-57 .22

I am comtemplating getting a .177 barrell to help it reach out a little further.

please keep you hand and the lever at all times, and an arm in between the gun and lever while loading the pellet. put you hand on grip before you try to release the front bear trap. PM me for more infor, but a mistep here could cost you some broken parts or worse...a finger.

I'm loving mine, which I got 2 weeks ago...in .177.

Though I think eventually I'll pony up and buy the .22 barrel too...it is a very cool gun

I have one in .177 and .22, both home tuned and both are fine shooters. The .177 does of course shoot much flatter and helps extend your reach a bit. Last time I took my .177 hunting (last year) I nailed 2 nice sized rabbits. Both rabbits were taken at 30 yards and were clean head shots. I have short 4x32 scopes on both guns and they fit very nicely. The QB57's are great guns, easy to work on and are fine shooters.

When I was reading some old post regarding those classic modded QB57s, I believe the mainsprings had been changed to gain power.
My question is did doing that significantly affect the shooting characteristics. I believe in one case a B3 manispring had been used as well as a secret spring.

If you want to make the 57 into a great shooter, put in a MF19-080-RD or BL gas spring. I put them in my 57 and 58. Both now shoot accurate enough to use in field target matches. Both also needed some barrel and balance work. They have similar power plants but the 57 is easier to work on. The 58 has a more conventional looking stock. The 58 can have problems with a tight breech that affects accuracy. The removable barrels in the 57 do not have the problem. The 57 has the potential to become a very accurate low power rifle without too much work. The gas springs are the biggest expense, costing about $50 each.

I read a post here or somewhere regarding gas springs, there were 3 colored ratings for the pistons the person had used. They had to make components as well to adapt them I think.

Adapting a gas spring to the 57 is fairly easy. You only need one custom spacer. If you don't have access to a lathe, you can probably substitute a stack of (1) 5/16 flat washer and (3) 1/4 flat washers mounted to the bottom of the gas spring with a 6mm FH screw. There are 4 common ratings for the gas springs, but I have found that the RD(red) and BL(blue) are the safest choices.

In the 57, I am shooting AA 7.33gr Falcons at 720fps using the BL spring.

My QB is a .22 because in Canada it was rated under 500fps. After reading that the .177 would be the better shooter over distance I decided that rather than try to get a .177 barrel from Archer I would power up. I think I will contact Nforcer since they are close and see what can be done, thanks for responding.

I had to go to work and couldn't follow up with any of this until now . It looks like I'll probably go with the .177 cal. I've never tuned anything, so I plan to shoot a little bit first and then do a simple tune just to get my feet wet so to speak. I'd like to pimp it out to look a little bit like Gene's too. Is a gas spring the same as gas piston ? The thought that I could someday change it a gas piston is very interesting. Over my head right now, but I would like that for sure. How is the trigger in the 57's do I need to do anything there ? I'm thinking Leapers 3-9 compact too for a littile more than the gun cost...lol

I also very much support dpricenator's advice about the importance of safe cocking when using this - or any other side lever air rifle. The second post in this view of the same blog shows the painful results that may occur if you do not keep your arm between the opened cocking lever and body of the gun when loading. http://www.@#$%^.info/search/label/Safety Ouch!

As for a scope, my preference is for a long eye relief scope, but these are an endangered species at present and I'm hoping to find something suitable at the SHOT Show in a few days time.

The trigger on mine seems to have a very heavy pull but mine could just be an odd one out, other than that they are a very good and very reliable rifle.
