I was wondering what lube to use on the o rings on a benjamin hand pump. I replaced all of the o rings on mine because the pump failed, I used left over moly paste from my trail xl and found out that the moly paste makes the pump hard to operate, the pump works but is hard to pump.

First I would take that pump apart and get as much of the moly out of it as you can. Silicon grease is what I use and it can be picked up at any plumbing supply or hardware.

I wouldn't Alex, just stop by an grab a little tub of grease, ton's of uses for AGing so it's worth the price. A little dab goes a long way.

will the grease make the pump hard to pump? The difference between motor oil and moly paste is huge. can I use any silicone grease?

No Alex the grease is pretty slick, an I have seen it from thick(like my 2 tub's) to rather thin to where it could flow/pour out of tub(just ask Gary LOL), you can get plumber's silicone at about any major store or you can go up a step an get what is called "diver's" silicone(not sure where to find it), it will come in a 1oz. little plastic container an for that it will run you around $7, now remember that you only want a VERY light coating, to much an it will clog up your pump such as the small intake area. A small amount will do you just fine, I have not made a dent in my supply in over a year of use an at least 3 HPA AG take down's an 1 pump build.

I called Home Depot and they have some silicone grease in the plumbing section, I think I will try it.

I was told by Sun Optics (the manufacturer of the Pump) that you should use Non Detergent 30W motor oil.

RWSshooter we have had 2 or 3 pump's that people went that route(same info) an their pump's let's just say treated them to rather loud surprise's. I have not been to Sun Optics but I would lay odd's you won't see it posted there now.

The liquid carrier in spray silicone, will wreck your pump, simply don't use it. The liquid carrier will destroy O-rings and melt plastic parts or weld the together. Ask me how I know this, destroyed a couple of plastic co2 pellet pistols. Neither, ever worked again after a good flushing with liquid silicone spray.

My 0.02 ¢ about how much divers silicone grease to use, just enough applied to o-rings for to have a shiny glossy surface. Any build up is too much. Divers silicone is food grade and it's safe to eat, because it's used on breathing apparatus. Never used plumbers silicone, no telling what's in that stuff, wouldn't want to contaminate my skin with it.

I hadn't heard about any pumps having problems using the oil...obviously, otherwise I wouldn't be using it on my pump. Thanks for the warning. I always wondered if there could be a chance of Dieseling

...maybe its time to strip it down, flush it out, and silicone up!

Someone posted a thread a few months ago about using motor oil on their pump rebuild and how it exploded and messed up their hands. That's the least of your worry. If you get any petroleum based product in the air tube of a disco or a marauder from the pump, it can explode from the high-pressure air. That's something that's right next to your face. Take it from someone who works with aircraft high-pressure air and oxygen systems. You don't get much more dangerous than that.

There is a grease made for O-rings/seals etc....
its called RUBBER GREASE..
comes in a Caster or Lanolin base...

Can you post a link, stating this lube is safe for use on high pressure air pumps and high pressure air gun O-rings. My research seems to recommend it for Automobile brake systems. I couldn't find anything saying this product is safe to use in a high pressure air environment. Do you actually use this stuff on a airgun pump?

I don't recommend using Rubber Grease, containing Lanolin fat or Castor oil around high pressure air, sounds like a fire or explosion hazard in the making to me, I could be wrong. Divers silicon grease is 100% pure nonflammable silicon, that's what the manufacturer recommend and I don't recommend taking chances with the unknown.

I have used ACE hardware plumbers silicone grease and it ruined the shaft of my pump. The pump had fallen over and the handle extended up a few inches. Where the bottom o-ring sat there is a HUGE band of corrosion. I knocked it down with steel wool but it's not great. DO NOT USE PLUMBERS SILICONE unless you know it's safe from oxidizing.

Just get a small tube of silicone grease at any auto parts store. It's spark plug boot treatment. Been using it for a long time with no issues. The corrosion inside an HPA pump or airgun reservoir is most likely from moisture in the air not the grease itself, IMHO.

Guys, you generally want to use silicone oil for dynamic (moving) O-rings in a high pressure pump. 30W silicone oil is a good viscosity. It is sold as R/C shock oil. That is, oil for the shocks of radio controlled cars. Search "silicone shock oil" at hobby shops or Amazon.

Silicone grease, on the other hand, is better suited as an assembly lube for static (non-moving) O-rings. It is usually too viscous to be preferred for sliding O-rings. I don't know whether it will have any adverse effects on wear and longevity, but it made pumping noticeably more difficult when I tried it.

If you want to use something more exotic, look at the Krytox GPL 10x series.

Dave, 25W should work great! I wouldn't want to go any lighter though. If there is a 35W or 40W, I would probably grab that instead. At the extremes of low viscosity, the oil can't stay where you want it and just wants to pool up at the bottom.
