Stripping an HW97K!

My new HW97K is now a week old. I've been trying to learn as much as possible about it and how it is assembled.

I've taken apart my other springers but they all had the trigger assembly held by two pins, that when removed, also released the spring.

I noticed the HW's have a threaded plug that retains the main spring. I have a spring compressor and have to worries about removing the threaded end.

My question concerns the dovetail on the top of the receiver. My scope rings straddle both the fixed part of the receiver and also the "threaded end".

Once it has been taken apart, is it a problem to reassemble so that the dovetail on the two parts align properly? I can see if it tightens-up at a slightly different point, the scope rings will never line up.

Hi Craig,

Thanks for the link. I had already seen this and it was helpful in a general way. The final words, "replace everything in reverse order" don't really address any alignment issues.

Again, I understand the necessary steps to take it apart and put it back together. My concern is the final tightening of the threaded part. If it is over-torqued or under-torqued, the dovetail will not line up.

I might be worrying about nothing! It is possible that when 'snugged-up' it will align perfectly. I would think that if this was a problem it would be common knowledge with lots of posts about it.

I have no desire to take the new HW97K apart any time soon. But eventually I will because I am curious by nature!<g>

If for some reason the dovetail was off slightly when reassembled, it would just mean I would have to move my scope rings a small amount so that they were both on the fixed part of the receiver. No big deal?

You may have to join to view and there are a couple others. Do not worry about lining up just square up the trigger slot and it all falls in place.

Thanks for the link. I am actually a member of that forum. When I follow the link, however, no pictures show up on my computer, just the step-by-step dialogue.

In looking at the other link provided by Craig, I notice that the threaded plug has a partial hole drilled and tapped in it that lines up with the [variously called] "fixing nut" or "trigger housing bolt" or "retaining bolt" [depending on where you are viewing the disassembly pictures].

So my assumption is that when the threaded plug in screwed into the end of the receiver tube and rotated until the "trigger housing bolt" [or whatever] can be screwed into it, then that will theoretically line-up the two pieces . . . making the dovetail also line up.

I know, from my machine shop work, that a threaded part doesn't provide the 'location accuracy' of a dowel pin however.

But hey, if I'm the first to question this, it must not be a problem! I'll certainly discover for myself when I finally take the thing apart.

Hi again Craig,

I just Googled HW disassembly and came across a U-tube video of a guy taking apart a break barrel HW which has the same threaded plug spring retainer.

As I suspected, when he put it back together he needed to continue rapping the threaded plug with a padded tool until the dovetail lined up, using his finger as a gauge. All this makes sense now. The plug is so tight at this point that it would never loosen on its own with recoil or normal handling.

In other words, once aligned, it will stay there.

Great info, but I'm a little confused about how to use a spring compressor with an HW since it has a threaded plug that holds the spring. When disassembling, do I loosen the spring compressor a little but as I slowly unscrew the plug?

I went one step further for alignment.  I aligned using fingernail test....then before ever tightening the bear trap mount screw on bottom....I used an old one piece mount and center it over seam and tighten clamp screws on mount.  Then and only then I tighten the beartrap mount screw on bottom.  I am not sure if its needed but it seeemed like the mount would slightly move the end cap to align dovetails with tube.

Yes. You can unscrew it about 90% then engage the compressor to stop the end block from flying and loosen as you continue unscrewing.
