Real Improvement or Marketing Hype?

Isn't this the same thing as the Butler Creek flip-ups that have been around for a while?  Looks almost the same.

The Butler Creek covers are similar, but they definitely don't fold flat the way these do.

For many years hunters have not done too badly with a bikini-type scope band.  Not as quick to flip up but still not too hard to take off.  Lots cheaper, too, and one size fits most.

Resurrecting an old thread...

I saw this on Nigel's site and was curious. I emailed the manufacturer asking if they had a US distributor, but they did not respond.

I decided to try making one myself. I carefully took the clear lens out of a cheap plastic bikini-style set of scope covers. Next, I CAD'ed up a quick 1:1 template of 4 triangles spaced around a circle. Taped the clear lens onto the template, then taped off the triangles. Painted the 4 triangles the brightest shade of yellow I had in my project box (Testor's model paint) and let it dry.

Lastly, I squeezed the lens into the Butler Creek Multiflex eyepiece cover paint-side-in, adjusted the position, then installed the cover onto my scope (Winchester/Daisy 3-9x32).

The results are pretty good. The paint edges are not crisp, but then again, the indicators are out-of-focus anyway, so as long as they are the right shape and in the right place, all's well.

It's very easy to adjust out parallax when you have indicators whether you're off left-right or up-down.

All in all, I like the integrated Accucover better (plus their scope covers lay down flat), but at $30 plus shipping, I'm happy to bang out my own and get similar results.

I bet Nigel would sell plenty of covers if he managed to get a US distributor, since lots of folks would probably want scope covers anyway, and the modest premium for covers that have the simple little sighting feature and also lie flat would be okay with lots of shooters, including those with powder burners.

It looks good. Will it hold up? I have broken all my flip up covers when shooting in the cold. At below zero(farenheit) temperatures they have all snapped off when opening, caught on clothing or in use somehow. They get a bit brittle at 20 below zero. Have them on four different scopes and all have broken off shooting in these conditions. When warm, they have a bit of give. When cold, they crack right off.

Will this fold open cover break off in the cold?

The cover is a Butler Creek Multi-flex cover - the body is rubber, the cap is a pliable plastic, so I'd say it would hold up fairly well. Plus, I'm in central NC, so I don't have to worry about getting even near 0°F. When I lived in Ottawa though, I've experienced -50°C more than once.

I don't know anything about the materials/construction of the Accucover covers.

You have done a pretty tidy job of copying the AccuCover. I know how fiddly it is to make these by hand! Anyone interested in buying the AccuCover will get a rugged scope cover (will not break in cold weather) the chevrons are also coated in a special fluorescent paint which is highly visible in poor lighting.

I have the Butler Creek flip up covers on my scopes. I'll make some little green triangles and stick them on to see if it helps or even makes a difference

I know that some of the scopes I have the whole eye piece moves when I adjust the magnification on the scope so it would be one more thing for me to adjust. Now if it was on a fixed powered scope I would try it.

Early adopters always have to pay a bit. Nick and his partner have to recoup considerable expense. I will say, it looks and smells of good design and engineering. I love that type of stuff. I'm going to "test concept" on my current scope, and if, as I expect, I have a problem this will correct, I'm going to cough up and buy this on principle.

People who see a problem and provide an elegant, high quality solution deserve to be rewarded--that way, they keep doing it.

You'd have to be able to rotate the assembly every time you adjusted the focus on the eyepiece. At my age, my eyes change from day to day- sometimes hour to hour.

Me too, U.P.  I find I adjust the focus on the rear lens almost as much as the AO front bell  .

The thing that makes me a little skeptical is that the arrows are aligned with the cross hairs and are not independent of them like a bubble level.  If you are already canting the scope, I can't see how this would make any difference since it is not mechanically correcting the problem.  I'm not so sure I buy into it being able to correct it from a purely psychological standpoint.  What do you guys think?
