Avenge-X chasing air leaks
«

Started this afternoon with what on first glance should have been a quick and easy fix: air leaking from where the air tube attaches to the block. Well several O-rings later and it appears there is a new leak further into the receiver. Looks like I will be tearing this rifle down and replacing all O-rings. Does anyone know of a tear-down video dealing with the Avenge-X Classic?

I have managed to locate a video on Youtube dealing with the tear-down and reseal of the Avenge-X (all variants). The video is from "Shooters Den" located in Pakistan so no English. Watching the video several times and paying attention to the details shown has helped me understand the construction of my Classic Avenge-X. Now on to the resealing job. For those of you interested here is the link:

I just finished the last two hours chasing leaks in my 1 year old Avenge-X. Each and every O-ring I came to within the rifle was hard, brittle and a real pain to remove. For those of you considering this task be aware the O-ring kit from Pyramid Air isn't much better than those installed at the factory. I am currently looking for a full listing of the O-rings utilized in these rifles and will be posting my findings once an aftermarket set has been assembled.
The video I posted above was a good visual aid in getting the project completed. Overall not a terrible task if good quality O-rings are available. One thing I did notice once everything was back together and a full measure of air installed - the regulator creeped from 100 bar to about 160 bar. Not sure how that happened as I did not touch the regulator. Hopefully the rifle will hold air through the night as I am looking forward to shooting it in the morning.
Oh yah, there was one extra part found on the towel once the full assembly was completed: a very tiny external circlip. Wonder where it came from. Maybe the forstock mount? Only thing near where I found the circlip.

Did you figure out where that "extra" part belonged?

No, I never did figure out where that little clip came from. Gun seems to shoot well and next week will be working up a power tune for the FX Hybrid slugs. Guess I'll just wait for the next take down.
Any ideas where that clip came from?

I bought a classic in .22 a couple of months ago and have been pellet and slug testing. It's taking longer than I would like. I need to do the testing at a range which is not open everyday and can get busy. When the wind is up, it's not worth my time to go, and it's been a very windy spring here.
So far I'm just testing with the factory reg setting and increasing the hammer. The Hybrids are OK, but the .217 Knockout slugs are better, and the JSB Monster ReD's shallow skirt are best. All in the low to mid 800's. The FX 18.13's are good but the default reg with 0 hammer was still too fast @ 920's, and I'm too cheap to de-gas to lower the reg.
.
I had been hoping to see more avenge-x tuning discussion here and at the other place, but nothing. I'm guessing everyone is happy with Steve's tuning video.

Steve at AEAC does a great job of testing and showing how he tunes the various guns coming to hand. Although his information is fairly comprehensive I have learned to take that information and treat my rifles as individuals. Learning to tune and hit the marks prefered by my guns is very satisfying.
How are you filling your Avenge-X; hand pump? If you purge the air tank and reset your regulator to base, lightly turned fully in (CW) and then back-out 1/2 -> 3/4 turns (CCW) you should be set to begin your testing with a low regulator setting. It should only take this initial reset of the regulator to get you on track with the projectile of choice 1 -> 2 times. Pellets are much easier to tune for than slugs. One thing that seems to make a difference for me is to fire a couple of shots after making regulator, hammer spring, or projectile changes. This allows the rifle to settle some before shooting for groups.
Remember to make one change at a time and then test. Yeah, it does take time but you are shooting and that in and of itself should prove relaxing.

I'm filling from SCBA tanks. I don't have a compressor, so I need to take the tanks to the local dive shop. Not far or expensive, just time consuming. The dive shop doesn't get the tanks full to 4500 so I miss a few fills that way and then
I agree each gun/barrel are unique in what they like. Right now, I'm working through a bunch of .22 pellets and slugs to see what this gun seems to like and then start tuning for those.

I never touched the trigger but that clip may have been loose and fallen out when pulling the action from the stock. I will double check the trigger group and compare it to the schematic. Thanks for pointing me in that direction.

Where did you get the schematics from? Any way to get a copy?

The best one I have found is on the Pyramyd Air site:
https://www.pyramydair.com/model-schematic/m/air-venturi-avenge-x-classic-synthetic-stock/5773
Another is the same thing but highlights the O-rings from the receiver specifically. Another user posted this schematic and I have attached it here.
