Sheridan fires when safety moved

Hello members,

Been a while, life and all....my 1986 Model C Bluestreak has some issues.

Place saftey on FIRE and retract bolt.  Place rifle on SAFE and pump 8 times.  Insert pellet and point on target, close bolt.  Move rocker from SAFE to FIRE and rifle discharges without touching the trigger.  Inspection of trigger shows the hooks (sears?) are worn down.  It will discharge also while pumping with safety off.  No pellet in chamber, but cocked as described.

I was able to chrony some speeds and 485 FPS with 14.3 pills was the best I got.  Would an adjustable pump rod help?

Retains air after firing, sometimes need to cock the bolt 3 times to clear it all.  That may be the hammer spring? 

I am the original owner and out of all my other firearms and gadgets, this rifle that I bought brand new brings a smile to my face like no other rifle.  I feel like a kid when I shoot!  I searched for theses symptoms , but perhaps I missed them.  If anyone has some guidance, I would greatly appreciate the help.

Broken spring or damaged holding sear .... Remove action and take a look, a very simply system !!
A worn sear may be able to get a minor regrind to square up holding edge.  A weak or broken spring will aggravate the situation

You have a worn sear.  Regrind all the curve out of it.  Cut a true 90 degree in the sear and smooth it up.  I too would change the spring.  Don't use until you are sure you have repaired.  You can also purchase new parts.

Stumbled across a new trigger and that seems to have fixed it.  Sadly, after just over 50 rounds down the tube since receiving it back for a solder job on the barrel separation, the solder did not hold up and it has separated again.  The shop claimed to be a well known professional business specializing in such repairs..........not so sure now....

So until such a time when I find a reputable shop, then I guess I can address the other issues...low velocity, adjustable pump rod...customer service ain't what it used to be...

   Did you get 485 fps with 8 pumps ? Is so , it is very weak . Have you lubed it lately ? You should get about 625 - 650 . An adjustable rod is not going to give you an increase like that.
    I suggest removing internal parts , resolder the barrel ( good luck )  & reassemble with a new rebuild kit.

The internals were also rebuilt by the same shop that did the solder work.  This was all completed within the last few weeks.  Having read up lately I may have misunderstood that an adjustable pump rod could boost velocity.  8 pumps is all I have ever used in the rifle.  Indeed I have properly lubricated it, gave the barrel a light cleaning and even worshiped at the alter of high velocity....    so I reckon it may just go sit again for another spell as I try to puzzle it all out.  Terribly frustrating as I really thought that it was going to take me back to 1986....

Well, you might look into removing the rear site, if it is the one with the wedges to hold it in place, and install a Williams peep site instead (model 5DSH).  The wedges can put pressure between the tube and the barrel and contribute to separation.  You didn't mention the year your rifle was made, but if it has 2 holes drilled and tapped on the right side of the loading port, the Williams is an easy drop in.  Otherwise you have to drill and tap the holes.  Or get a Baker scope mount (bakerairguns.com) and put a red dot or scope on it.

Another thing that can cause barrel separation is how you hold the gun when pumping... especially if you are prone to pump 8 strokes per shot. I hold mine just ahead of the breech. I've seen many hold the wrist of the stock... in my opinion that puts added leverage on the solder joint.

        An adjustable rod will give you a tad more power but not 150 psi more ! My suggestion is to send it back to the repair person, & HOPE he can get it soldered better .  Then put it back together & check with 8 pumps. It may be more  powerful.
      Note; I have a stable full of Sheridans & rarely ever use 8 pumps . 3 pumps for plinking, 5 for small game, & 8 for larger game , or longer distance shooting.

The shop outsourced the solder work which was never mentioned in our phone call.  When I advised of the separation, he immediately claimed it was the fault of the people/shop/who knows...that did the work.  It will not go back to him. HOPE with that place is not a plan of action.  The original rear sight fell off so many years ago and then I installed the peep sight.  Worked great for many moons.  I don't recall ever grasping the wrist as I pumped the rifle, but as mentioned, placed my hand right over the loading port or on the plastic barrel protector.

    Darn . I am sorry to hear that. If the repairs were done by a reputable air rifle repair shop, I think they should help you with it. But, if you don’t want to return to them , I understand . There are owners who have tried different ways to repair them, but resoldering is all I know.
