There's a difference between roll pins and spring pins. Roll pins are a flat sheet of metal rolled into a pin with a solid center. Spring pins are like a tube with a slot cut in it. To get spring pins out I have a drift that one end is turned down to fit inside the pin, the other end is just slightly smaller than the outside diameter of the pin. I insert the drift and tap the pin out, and use the drift to hold the pin to tap it back in.
I have no issues knocking the pins out with a hammer and punch. I may have been the one to suggest the motorcycle roller chain breaker, for those with less experience as a possible option.
