Stoeger X5

I didn't use my Stoeger X5 for about 6 months and now it is much louder and has more recoil than it ever did.  I can't rest my cheek against it because the recoil hurts my jaw.  What could have happened?  How to fix it?

There is little that can happen to the gun while sitting. Seals can deteriorate, rust can set in, but not much else. It's possible if you had it muzzle up that some combustible oil or grease seeped into the compression chamber and it's detonation or detailing, but that should burn off pretty quickly. The Stowger X5 is not a powerful springer, so it's very unusual to get much recoil from it. Maybe you just forgot what a springer feels like, if you been shooting pcp or other non recoiling guns in the interim.

After a period of non use this Stoeger X5 still worked okay for a couple dozen shots, then this extreme recoil and loud sound like the piston slamming into something.  Do I need to remove the spring to put in new seals?

Yes, you need to open it up to determine what has happened inside. Likely the piston seal and or spring has serious issues.

It does sound like the piston seal isn't working correctly. Did you try putting a few drops of pure silicone oil in the transfer port.

Thank you, I haven't tried that.  Can I put the oil in the combustion chamber or do I need to disassemble gun to get at the transfer port?

Yes, put a few drops into the chamber and set the rifle on its butt, muzzle up and leave it overnight. You should work the seal back and forth a bit after that by partially locking the gin, just hold the barrel carefully and go half way so it doesn't catch the trigger sear and work the piston to spread the oil. You use silicone oil only, or chamber oil (which is just high priced silicone oil). Here is a good read on the issue.

But from what you describe as symptoms it seems to me that the seal or spring has deteriorated so oiling the seal may not help.
