It has been quite a while since we've had Deer visit our backyard.  This was quite the treat seeing this one this morning. 



Quite a departure from our regular visitors!

 What deer do you have down there?
I've always heard the term "Swamp Deer" but don't know if that is an actual breed. Thought they were spotted.
.. is that a young doe Mule Deer... looks small for our White-tail Ladies here.

It's a Whitetailed Deer, they just don't get as big as the variety you have.  They have Key Deer in the Florida Keys, they are quite small (about the size of a dog).  We saw some last year when we vacationed in the Keys.  Florida Whitetails are probably referred to as Swamp Deer because there is so much swamp land here in Florida and they seem to like to graze in the swamps.  But, I don't think that's an actual breed, just Whitetails adapting to their surroundings.

And you live where the southern Whitetails are considered big!  Down here along the coast the deer are almost dwarfs.  Key deer are smaller but not by much!  Surprised you don't see more of them Paul.  They do really well in suburban habitats.

We actually have a small herd of about 6-8 that live in the neighborhood.  We see the when walking the dog some afternoons, but don't typically see them in our backyard.  This was only the second time I've caught one on camera in the past 10 years!  We see them about every other month while walking the dog.

That reminds of a true story..
 In the Air Force we boarded a C-17 on our way to Texas for gunnery competition.
We stopped in Alabama to pick up more competitors.
A Cap't and a Col'n sat in the seats in front of me... (rut row)
During the flight the Cap't was braggin about bagging an 85 lbs deer.. I laughed behind him.
He rolled around and said "You can do better SARGENT?!" in a condescending "officer way".
  The Colonel leaned over and said "careful.. them Hoosiers got Big ones".
 I then respectfully told the Cap't my last Doe dressed out at 150#... Dad's Buck that year was 220#.
Never heard another word from him all the way to San Antonio.

Heck, we catch them peeping in our windows.

Last big count was 12 in  my yard the other day..max count ever was 34... In my 2 acre front yard!

 Gentlemen ( and I use that term loosely  !) , I 'll try to send a pic or video of the piebald ( white splotched)  deer that were at my dairy permission a couple
 years ago. All four were does, probably same family. A friend of mine about 10 miles from me has one frequenting his place.

 Guys I did a number on birds today. Multiple sparrows & two pigeons . I sent a pic of my "retriever " to Randall for posting. The farm cats were well fed the last
 couple days. And , I saw my first G-hog out & about Thursday. Spring is around the corner ! ( Don't hold me to that,please.)

Wow!  That is pretty cool!  Thank you Randall and Marty!  We just have the regular ole brown ones here!  That one is a pretty rare color around here.  Hard to believe he has 3-4 of them in his area.

I myself have only seen the brown color variations in person! Plus bull elk up REALLY CLOSE...too close for my liking in fact...😂!

Wow!  Your very own herd!  That is pretty cool!  I bet it's great when the weather is nice to sit out and watch them graze!

Nice healthy doe there Paulie, haven't seen any deer this year so far, but I've been hibernating more than anything, it's been Cold here....

Thanks Kevin!  We see them occasionally in the neighborhood, but not very often in our backyard.  It's always a treat when we do!
