Standardizing pellets for testing? 2025-02-13 Post!

Ed is the only other person that comes to mind who talks about pellet hardness and runs tests with his r9 over the years.  Memory is a funny thing. In addition to accuracy, hardness certainly impacts penetration as well.

I have posted here on the pellets, I have tested/shot in my AG's
I gotten any new ammo in several years, about time I restock again on the special stuff.

The Crosmans Pointed (dead soft lead), the HP are second best, seem to shoot very well, when uniformed/sized etc, for my 40/50 yd starling/Hosp sniping.

The one item that is NEVER touched is PELLET HARDNESS.
Ya, I know a can of worms and all ends....LOL

Some pellets will shoot very accurately on of AG,
change the hardness only and you couldn't the inside wall of a barn,
standing inside it with the doors shut.

The standard lead pencil test is fairly easy to use and provides useful information.

Something to think about..........FWIW

 Some here prefer the Crosman Premier pellets but they fail in all my guns. My simpleton "bite test" says they are harder that JSB / H&N offerings.
I am sure there is a correlation?

I finally found my post on testing pellet hardness,
that Wayne 52 had stickied in the pellet casting section:

These were just the pellets I had on hand, and Wayne sent me some of his cast Bob's bullet designs, in pure soft lead.
I have some more pellets to add also.

And if you are testing pellets, test a several different speeds, 300fps, 500fps and 900 fps,
I found out that changing the speed did changed the accuracy.
In my QB 78 22 cal, when I got into the 800-950 fps range the OEM Crosman HP started becoming very accurate for me at 50yds, and I am NOT a great rifle shot, I have a 90% on Hosp at 50 yds. Just something more to add to the pot.  ymmv
