Daisy 853 pumper tune

Wondering if any members are aware of a tune to boost the 853 pumpers velocity. It's a nice quiet, smooth shooter. Execellent for the back yard stuff. They rated at about 500 fps, so probably shoots less. This would be very nice if a guy could just get 600 fps out of it.

in aug. i ask the same ques. but no-one had any ans. so i start a search for the info.
i have come across some threads that area few years old for my 953 which is almost the same internally. as a matter of fact the 753 share some of the same parts too.
when i bought my 953 i had it chrono by pa using RWS MEISTERKUGELN 8.2 lead pellets.
here was the results( brand new 953 fresh out of the box rated at 500ftp )the tape says:
1- 484.50       7- 418.73
2- 403.93       8- 415.67
3- 423.72       9- 421.13
4- 426.51      10- 422.63
5- 402.19      11- 445.46
6- 412.70

several of the links on the first link :The document 'Daisy 953 Disassembly Photos' has been deleted.
i try to find the guy who post this but wasn't able. maybe you'll have better luck.
that's all i have and could find. i guess no-one has any interest in mod these guns. since they are foe competitive shooting at 10m.
when mine starts failing it might try the one on filling the piston head and reseal it.

i didn't find them that great to deal with. i wanted about 2 wks after ordering from before i had to send several email about when they were going to ship it to me. never sent me any conformation on my order.
the book is $2.00 but s/h is $8.00, but they did fedex to me finally.

Good information sky, you put some effort into this already!

Thanks for sharing. I think it was airgunandy, did some mods on a Benji pump. But just not much info out there.

when started  this,people were talking about mods to their guns. so i started to learn as much as could about my 953.
that's the info i posted for sharing with other 753/853 (c-cm)/and 953 enthusiast.

now if you think thats was something you should the over 100 pages i printed out ,for various sites to learn about air gunning, since i'm new to the sport. it's like a beginners guide to ag's.
an i still have a lot to learn.

Very cool, learn all ya can. Yer shooting's looking pretty solid judging from that target. Good luck on your pellet hunt, went through one of those recently myself, don't wanna have to go through that again. It can be very frustrating and expensive. that's the first i heard about the sampler, but to i just rec. 2000(4 x 500) pellets to try.
i remember them next time i want to try a different brands.
i have 8 of them already.

Mitch,,thanks for your wonderful research on this thread,,,found it VERY helpful.

 I haven't been able to see an actual schematic diagram,,,those have usually been deleted/removed. 

A question I have is about the bolt (pellet pusher into barrel) on a 853,,,presuming it is the same as your 953:  is there an O-ring at the shoulder of the bolt (prevention of air leaking backward)? 

I have 2 other pumpers and a CO2 from Crosman and they all have an O-ring on the bolt.

I recently aquired a used 853 and I notice there is no O-ring on that bolt.  It does average 460 fps with Gamo Match pellets 7.71gr. 

Summary:  Does the 853 supposed to have an O-ring on the bolt?

nope. my 753 does not have it either. But let me tell you this. This is the most pellet sensitive rifle i have. I was able to get the highest velocity with jsb rs 7.33 gr domes (520 fps) and luckily enough, they are very accurate. Dont loose sleep over velocity. what this rifle lacks on the umphh department more than makes up on the accuracy department. I am not a 10 M shooter by any stretch of the imagination. But i have shot my 753 at a target 100 yards away. And hit ! is very consistent in speed so once you work the hold over, you are golden. I entered the data on chairgun pro and it said that it hit the target at about 300 fps... but it hit!. the most fun about this rifles are when you get into minisniping. look it up... minisniping.com... is crazy addicting and fun. that is when i discovered that the x53 series rifles where very effective sniping weapons for hunting small invasive birds. Head shots at 20/25 yards are ridiculously easy. Try it... throw a decent scope in top and have at it on a target 40 yards away. the groups are going to amaze you,and then you are going to start pushing the envelope til it becomes ridiculous and you are doing more artillery practice than marksmanship.

email crosman an ask for the 753,853and 953 actual schematic diagram. they'll send them to you for free. that's how i got mine. All three share some of the same parts.

the bolt on my 953 doesn't have a o-ring. if you look at the bolt, it looks like in goes into the breach when retracting the bolt , looks like no room for a o-ring.

My 953 shot hotter than my 753 and darn near as accurate.  I kinda regret selling both of them.

The two essential tunes are the Pilkington trigger mod and tuning the piston stroke.  You really can't tune the valve for more FPE.  The best you can do is make sure your particular rifle is at it's optimum.  This is done by making sure the full stroke pressurizes the valve.  This is accomplished by opening up the cocking arm and adjusting the aluminum "wheel" at the end of the stroke with a screwdriver.  All this does is insure that there is no slack in the cocking linkage prior to it starting to compress air behind the cylinder.  I know this is hard to picture but I think the owner's manual and the tuning guide show pictures.

Still don't expect much above 550 fps with 7 gr.  IIR my 957 shot around 570 fps out of the box.  Although I could be completely wrong because it has been a long time and I'm too lazy to go into the basement and check my shooting book.

OK,,here is my almost finished project, which has been a lot of fun and pretty easy to do thanks to the help that all of you have given me.  I only have to put on the rear peep sites yet.

This rifle was bought used on this forum, used to belong to a JROTC program, was reconditioned by CMP folks.  It shot like new when I received it (as far as power) and its accuracy is still legendary.  Trigger was stock,,heavy, , but not real creepy.  And the wood finish was horrible ( I don't have a before pic - wasn't thinking - was just anxious to start working on it) with wiggly lines of discoloration on the butt from who knows what, remnants of old duct tape and finger nail polished ID lettering.

I stripped the stock with an orbital sander down to white birch?,,,then I stained it dark red Mohagany, followed by 4 coats of Polyurethane from a spray can.   I love the finished look of it. There is one small chunk out of the wood but hardly noticeable now.

I performed the Pilkguns 853 trigger Mod and polished the sear points with 600 grit sandpaper.  The trigger guard I had to drill into was nylon which made drilling and tapping threads VERY nice and easy.  I used a 6-32 X 3/4 inch philips head stainless steel screw instead of the suggesed 8-32.  I figured if I messed up on the 6-32 hole drilling I could probably straighten things out with the 8-32 - but it went well with the 6-32.    Another trick I used in performing this mod is rather than using a hack saw I used an Exacto Razor saw - very easy clean and smooth sawing of the nylon.


I also softened the rear trigger spring by completely compressing it for about 10 minutes with a clothes pin rather than clipping off a ring or two.  (A trick I learned on this forum)  (If it becomes too soft simply stretch it out again for more strength.)    The trigger is soooo nice now with this mod.

The barrel probably used to be blue'd but its all flat black now,,looks real good.  The receiver paint had chips out of it but it looks like new now also.

There is a lot of information out on the web for rebuilding this gun.  The CMP folks have a very nice 30MB Power Point Presentation of 116 pics that also covers the "C" version of receiver, its a free down load.

That cool trick of completely compressing the trigger spring on my 1377 to make it lighter didn't work on the springs of my 853.  Guess all springs are not created equally.  I left the springs of my 853 compressed over night and they haven't softened one bit.  Guess I'll starting nipping to get it where I want it.
