Brand new in the ARH box Anschutz 250 !!!!! Or, an FWB 603 ?

Hi all,

For some reason I cannot remember, I was looking for something  in particular, and I cannot remember what that was, to be exact.

While looking for the above mentioned,  I stumbled upon an odd guns for sale website  that linked  me to an  EBAY sale of a brand new in the box Anschutz  250 (an Air Rifle Headquarters Box !!)   Brand new never sold, never shot.  No rust,  sights all there.   

So I bid on it.  Why?  I have one hanging on the wall in my shop already!!   I think it was, I wanted the box. Robert Law  really packed them good, and  I have sweet memories of those days hunting quail with my HW35E. 

I lost the bid.   I cried all night.  We just had a massive wind storm, the lights were out, so nobody saw me tears. 

Anyway, lo and behold,  another 250  brand new in the box is up for sale again!!  The seller (who has a 100% satisfaction score)  somehow got ahold of  some or all of ARH's unsold stock.  The serial number is different, the pictures are slightly different, and this even looks better.

Well now.  What do I do?   What do I want?  What do I want to do?

Ok, let's analyze  this. It would be great if it needed no work, and shot for a few years, but is that likely, 50 years in a box? Do I want to get it working or keep it working.  NO.   

So why would I bid again?  because IT IS NEW IN THE  BOX.   It will look all shiny new, and no one else's grubby hands would have violated in any way, or dry fired it,  or any other nasty act of offense.   

6 hours later:  Ok, I have come to my senses.  I have a 250 on the wall already. what I really want now is a FWB 603 Single Stroke Pneumatic  that has no rust and either shoots good or can be rebuilt to shoot good.   I bought a Walther LGR in 1977,  and it was awkward to pump,  I like how FWB does it.

So,  I am looking for all the advice, good or bad,  on how to go about finding an FW 603.   Preferably pristine and new in the box !!!!

So nobody bought the 250's at the Hickory show?  What is the Hickory show anyway? 

Still looking for advice on best way to find a FWB 603.  I am in a rush,  I have to know how to achieve my 603 goal before the last 205 is gone  or I may be forced to bid again on the 205.  The clock is ticking,  I have 6 days left

The seller on ebay got the guns at a gun show (with airguns).  He swooped in and bought everything ARH before anybody else could and is reselling it all on ebay at higher prices. That is what people are telling you, I think.

I have to report back:  I FAILED.   You tried to help,  but  still,  FAILURE! 

I was wondering how an auction happens, so,  I bid the minimum on the new in the box (50 years in an ARH box!) Anschutz 250,  thinking, like last week,  it would go for much more.  After all,  I had made up my mind, I am forever a "FWB 603 guy" and I had lost my passion, I was just being curious.   

Well along with a few cats,  curiosity  sort of skewered me.   I was the only one to bid.  Now I am the  proud father of a something I had decided I did not want.  At least allot less than I was willing to pay for last week.

The seller has a 100% buyer rating,  the buyers rave about how well he packs them, so I have no qualms about that aspect of this adroit move of mine.

I have had an Anschutz match air rifle on my  wall for the last 20+ years. (I ran into guy that  had bought a batch of high quality air guns at an auction, and he only wanted the FWB 124 to shoot pests at his vineyard. I ended up with an FWB 300, FWB 80, and an Anschutz side lever match air rifle of some sort.  All in good condition and  all worked, all for 350 bucks!)

There is no model number on the receiver of this Anschutz for some reason.  I did not know much about Anschutz, then or until recently.   It worked for a time, I love looking at it, handling it, admiring it.  I like the way it is built more than the FWB, no plastic, the rear peep and and front globe are much more impressive than what is on the FWB.     

So last week when I saw the first 250 up for auction,  I started researching.  Someone had posted a picture of the 3 versions of the 250, and I recognized the version one as what I had.  I know now that was wrong,  what I have is 220 !   So maybe I should not feel so bad, I am  starting a collection of Anschutz Match air rifles!  Anyone have a 380 they want me to take care of?

So that started the research on the 220 and 250.  After a couple of days of deep online research, I feinted and my eyes fell out of my head and rolled under the couch.

After awhile,  my wife was able to revive me and pop the eyeballs back in, so I am able to write this request for HELP.   So far, I found  a company in England that makes the  hydraulic damper seal kit and most anything else you would need for  the 250. 

 For the 220, luckily it has an air damper, and after taking the rifle all apart, that damper is still working well.  Even the breech O'ring and the piston bumper O'ring seem to be just fine.  It does need a piston seal.   The word on the street is I am going to have to make this myself,    Though I would rather not, hoping by some miracle  someone has started making them for sale.   I would imagine it would be a pretty safe bet to think that the breech seal and piston bumper for the 250 would work on the 220.  I have an inquiry to Custom Gun Parts, maybe they will know..  If I have to make (I have a mill and lathe, just no lathe experience) one, what material for the piston seal?   The 220 is the easiest spring gun to take apart I have ever come across.  A joy to work on.

While I have your attention,  where is the best place to go for FWB 300 parts?

I still  want a  FWB 603 as described in  the original post.   I have contacted Carel,  he may have something.     A thought just occurred to me,  acquire one in bad shape and very very low cost to practice working on.  Even a Junior will work for that. 🤓

The later production A220 was not stamped "Anschutz Mod 220", unlike the earlier versions.
The A220 and A250 parts are not interchangeable.
Even if your A250 is NIB, I would still replace the damper seals and breech/piston buffers. They were made of the same whitish-yellow material used on the FWB's, degrade with age, and the A250 will self destruct if the seals fail and the recoil suppressed gun becomes a recoiling gun.
The new Custom Parts seals are of a different compound and may be lifetime?
Custom Parts has parts for A250 and the FWB 10m guns; I don't believe that he stocks the seals for the 220?

Thank you for the info on the A220.   And Thank You to all those that have commented on my post.

I will not be shooting the A250 until a complete check out and no doubt will be ordering a completed  seals kit from Custom Gun Parts in the UK for it.  If it arrives and the blueing and wood are like new, I will be ok with my piggy bank going on a crash diet!

Too bad about  no parts for the A220,  there are others out there that would like to get them going again.
