Owners manual has the Diana 54 outputting less energy than the 48

Hello all,

I recently  received   my Diana 54, and in the manual it has  the 48 with 1.4 Ft Lbs more energy than the 54.

Anyone know  why the 54 was made to produce less energy?

The numbers in the manual don't mean much if anything, in this case. Diana is notorious with ever-changing energy specs, with no regard to actual changes in the powerplants. All the sidelever Dianas have the same powerplant, save for a 5mm longer stroke in the D54, to account for the sled movement.

Differences between individual guns, let alone guns that have been tuned in any way, is bigger than the difference stated in the manual. All the sidelever Dianas (D48 - 56) shoot somewhere between 20 - 24 fpe in .22 cal, when running well in a full power setup. An individual D54 can have a couple foot pounds on an individual D48. The proof is in the pudding, or chrono string.

In addition to the above information did the manual tell you the weight of the pellet used in each test or if the tests were for the same caliber gun?  Are the numbers based on an actual test or theoretical from an engineer's calculations or best guess?

They both have the same powerplant.  You will probably see that much variation between individual guns.

As the 54 has a recoil absorbing system, it is pretty much a given that it will result in a bit muzzle energy loss.......

In GENERAL, it is quite the contrary, Ron.

And you can test this with a Chrono and any piston airgun:

Shoot a string while holding rigidly the rifle
Then shoot another string, allowing the rifle to recoil freely.

You will see a slightly higher MV from the artillery held rifle than from the firmly held one.

The 54 performs the artillery hold for you. Simple.
