Diana 460 mystery

So my 460 has a mysterious issue. Any leads are appreciated, detectives!

I pull the lever down. The bear trap engaged. The safety engages. I hear that second click. So far, easy and usual

Now for the unusual... With the anti bear trap as still engaged and my hand on the lever, which is still down, I can click off the safety, pull the trigger (which feels like it should), and the piston releases. Every time I do this it happens.

However... If I cock the rifle, close the bear trap and lever, and shoot the loaded gun as one normally would, it often does not release the piston and the trigger feels mushy in the second stage. No shot fires, no release of the compressed spring.

What I've tried... Adjusting the trigger every which way, to no avail! I'm convinced it's not the trigger. How? Because the procedure described above (firing with cocking lever still down) yields a clean break of the trigger and rekease of the piston every time. 

Side note... Rather than have the bear trap catch the shot with the just mentioned procedure, I do catch it by holding the cocking rod with just enough force to do so.

They do that I found out by accidently pulling the trigger with my hand on the cocking arm to see what would happen

I wish the trigger worked reliably when the arm was closed for a shot like it does reliably with the arm open!

I don't know if this will help but it's something to try.  Back off the first stage (the front screw) by at least one full turn, two may be better.  Set the second stage where you'd like the gun to fire.  If you like the gun to fire near the back of the trigger travel (second stage backed way off) you will have problems.  I tried following the Tony Leach You Tube video and found his method doesn't work well with T06 triggers.  He prefers the gun to fire with the trigger way back.  For some reason this trigger seems to prefer firing near the center of its travel not the rear.  I don't like a long first stage so long so I added a small set screw at the front of the trigger assembly to adjust it separately.  Tony Leach recommended bending but aluminum is not very forgiving so I opted for the set screw.  I think I used a 2.5 mm screw which requires a 2 mm drill and of course a tap.

Remembering this advice you gave me a couple years ago, Thomas, I already tried this. You are right about the 460 prefering a center. It does fail less from the center than when the trigger is set back. However, it still fails when the lever is closed even when center.

Here's the mystery: the trigger never fails from the center or back when the cocking lever is down and I press the safety in and pull.

When you hold the lever down, the piston is probably a little further back than when the lever is closed. It sounds like it could be an issue with the sear engagement?

I'm at the Nationals so, I cannot write at length. Apologies.

The T06 trigger uses a spring between the upper lever and the lower.
That spring may have moved out of place.

And re-center the release point.
