P17 Mystery

My P17 decided to quit on me very suddenly and I can't figure out what is going on. It was shooting very nicely and I was testing pellets. I finished shooting one particular pellet and put the gun down to get a drink of water. I switched to a different pellet, same weight wadcutter. Pointed the gun at the target and pulled the trigger. It went click and nothing happened!!!

I broke the gun down and changed orings. Just as a precaution I checked for a burr on the air intake hole. I didn't feel anything but did some light sanding anyway. Put it all back together. Had no problems breaking down and reassembling. Loaded a pellet, one that had shot well before. I pulled the trigger and got another click.

I am at a loss for what to do next. I didn't find a thread addressing a similar problem. Is there some other place it could be losing pressure? Or is it not losing pressure and there is something else going on? I hate to give up on the gun because it shot very nicely when it was working.

Sounds like a trigger or hammer problem, not a O ring ir air thing.

Is the gun compressing air? If so and the air is just leaking away, you might replace the o-ring around the valve stem.

Well I had it completely broken down and changed all the o-rings. But I was checking it out after getting it back together. When I closed the action I got good compression. But I did it in a quiet room with my ear close to the gun. I could hear the air leak after it closed. So I have it apart again to see if I screwed it up the first time but I didn't see anything obvious. So I just replaced the valve o-rings again and we'll see what happens. I haven't got it back together again yet. The wife loves all the little parts and tools on the kitchen table. I'll get it back together after I finish my evening wine and cheese.

Well I must have screwed something up the first time. I got it back together again after replacing the valve stem o-rings. It is shooting nicely again. Love this gun for what it is. It shoots way better than its price point.

Glad you got it fixed. I have a gun with the same valve. It leaked the problem was a thin plastic washer that is supposed to compress the valve stem o-ring to get it to seal. I replaced the plastic washer with a brass one, that put more pressure on the o-ring and it sealed.

Well it is behaving normally again. But what still has me wondering is the suddenness of the failure. Normaly I would expect a leak to develop a little more slowly.

 I did bend the internal valve linkage on one, when I accidently closed the barrel latch on a shirt, and reopened it to get free. The results sound similar, glad you got it sorted out.

I've seen worse things closed in them.

Did any of you have a p17 parts gun? or a broken one? I need the upper receiver shell for mine and have not found anyone with one yet...
I modified mine to fit a 880 barrel and drilled mine beyond the point of being able to center the barrel with the transfer port.

I have two working 17's, a 120D version dual cal. and a Stoeger XP4 version, same gun with a different exterior. I also have another parts 120D I bought just for the .22 barrel. Same as a 17.

Found it! It's a Xisico XSP120. Same gun as a P17. No fiber optic, plain black open sights. It has a .177 barrel in it. It'll be a couple of days 'fore I mail it, cars in the shop. Only keep one since I retired. Miss Baby doesn't care to drive anymore.

LOL, thanks guys. its no rush. i'll be resucitating a project that broke my heart. I wanted that long barrel 450 fps P17 to then turn into a carbine... total and complete failure. Then i realized that was the only p17 i had, and regretted cutting into it. so i got all pieces back but i had drilled the barrel band up front that is part of the upper receiver... needles to say, P17 went down to 8$ and they dissapeared off the face of the earth. and now they are back at 60$... but still no parts available from Beeman/marksman. The other option would have been a P3 upper. Beaucoup $$$
