What is the "ultimately reliable" airgun?

You hear about "bug out" guns, and "survival guns", but if the @$%^ ever really were to hit the fan...

What would you all choose to have, in terms of, something you're not going to have to work on or repair, it just keeps working?

A multi-pump pumper?  I mean I can see that, perhaps a good Benjamin 392 or Crosman 362, or 13xx series?

A springer, not gas piston, but old school spring piston gun?

Seems to me, it has to come down to one of the two, I guess you could consider underlevers as well, probably more accurate overall than a traditional springer.  I don't see how a PCP can even enter into it.  One thing I noticed on my first go round with airguns, is if you don't live in a nice climate controlled house or apartment, stuff rusts and rusts fast!  I had noticeable rust on my PCP hand pump after a short time storing it. Nothing that killed it or caused function problems, but it would have eventually.

In any case I do live in an apartment now, so it's a bit harder to get out and shoot, but there are woods just down the street, and I've carried my rifle down, set up a target, and no one called cops or complained, so I'm able to get back into the hobby. Got all the guns in my sig back recently, so it's a humble collection, but I have fun. Anyway I think a springer is probably next on my list of buys.

So what say you, what is the 'least maintenence" there when you need it, airgun type?

Any vintage MSP Crosman, Benjamin or Sheridan would be my choice. With the ability to adjust the power according to what/how far you’re shooting, makes them very versatile.
Just keep the pump arm linkages & pump piston lubed up, they’ll last a lifetime.

There's no other gun I have shot as much or can shoot as well as Ol' Blue, plus being about my most prized possession there would be some sentimental comfort and a morale boost as well, as long as I do my part I can trust that I'll always hit what I'm aiming at with Ol' Blue.

Sure something like my Crosman 140 would maybe handle abuse better and I wouldn't have to worry as much about it, but I should be taking care of and worrying about such an important tool.
I also haven't shot it as much and don't have the level of confidence in my ability to shoot it.

This question does seem to come a couple times a year.
I kind if like it though,  because it pleases me to realize that my answer has never changed.

I remember one time a few years back when it actually got pretty heated ( heated for this tame forum anyways) and went on for at least a dozen pages if I remember correctly.
If I'm not mistaken some great members who had participated in that discussion don't happen to be here anymore and it seems that the fire is lost.

I've given a little bit of thought to this. My 362 in 25cal is quite a hammer at airgun ranges. My 362 is also a good one, but that "dang" #4 breech screw comes loose. I need to tear it down and drill and tap for an 8-40 screw like on the 25, it really made the breech solid. Until then it's not trustworthy enough. Or my hot rodded 1322, it's a great shooting gun, weighs very little, always handy, it doesn't give up much to a rifle. But the one I keep coming back to is my 140 with a 362 barrel fitted to it to look stock and the air passages opened up. It has a gun show peep sight on it, and it's as solid as a brick house. I hope I never have to make the choice.

I wish my home made "backpacker", 14" barrel 1322 with stock would aim right. IIRC I did put a steel breech on it once, but robbed it to use on a 2240. It hits nowhere near where the sights are and IDK if there's any use trying to adjust it. The screw on the sight doesn't tighten, and between the horrible plastic breech and plastic barrel band, the whole barrel can shift around a lot.

I think a steel or aluminum breech and some kind of rear sight will be needed to make this gun worth a "dang".

For as cheap and plastic as it is, my Daisy 880 is probably my most accurate and reliable airgun ATM.

Probably a Hatsan Edge or Airtact in .22 or .25 is my next gun.  I had an Airtact .25 before. Definitely a reliable gun for me, and shot well, once I learned how to hold a springer.  I remember though the only .25 pellets Big 5 sold was the ones pictured on the box, some H&N things that were pointed, and looked more like bullets than pellets, but they weren't slugs. They had a narrowed middle that would not engage the rifling, just at the top and bottom. They shot pretty well though and hit really hard.

TBH I think my old Hatsan AT44 in .22 didn't hit that much harder than my airtact .25, and I'd bet over the long term the springer will be a lot more trouble free...

Although my Leshiy Classic is every bit as durable, and only has a few o-rings (that I have plenty of).

Well I just pulled the trigger on a Crosman 362. Been wanting one since they announced the gun. not worthy I couldn't get the money together before the Hatsan refurbs were gone, but this is an entirely new gun to me, so I'm happy.

Hate to break it to you, but I think you'll be much happier with the 880 you already have. I just bought a C362 and sold it off after a week because it was garbage. If you want a new gun get a 901... like an 880 but even better.
