Safepac question

Ok, let me say that this is my first HPA build. I've been picking your brains by reading your posts, especially @avator's  2240 HPA build thread.

I took a few minutes over coffee to install my safepac. I did this to save on co2 and to be able to shoot in colder temps. I aired it up to 2000psi and got valve lock. Tore the back off and dumped the air. So I ran it back up to 1500 with the same results., a bunch of very weak, almost nothing, shots, before it starts to come alive. At 1200 I get about a dozen and a half shots that are weak then get a handful of good ones and then pressure falls right off.
This is with a stock hammer spring. I stopped at Ace hardware and picked up a couple heavier springs on my way to work, I'll swap it out tomorrow morning.
So, how are you guys able to run a stock spring up to 2k and get nice, flat strings? Power adjuster cranked up?
I am going to build a SSG for it but I want to get it working first. Thanks for any insight you may have.

Here it is. The balance is right around the trigger guard.  I really want to get it sorted out, I like this one.

May help if you posted some shot string velocity numbers so we can maybe see what's going on and help you better.

I'll have to get the chrono out. But I didn't need it, at 1500psi the first pellet would've went further if I'd spit it out like a seed. I'll get a heavier hammer spring in it and try to get some sort of baseline.

I've got 2 safepacs and hate them. One was on my 2250 and the first 2 shots were low power then 6 shots at high power. I got 2 more low power shots and time to refill. I wouldn't take another if it was free.

I don't see the point of using a Safepac when one could easily just use a PCP tube for the 22xx.

I used a SafePac on a 2240 conversion using a 2260 tube. I use a 13ci tank at 3000 psig with the regulator set at 1400 psig. I have a magnum hammer spring and a somewhat lighter valve spring. I get roughly 40 shots at 900 fps with a 14.3 grain pellet. This is out of a 24” 22 cal barrel. Very accurate but very loud without a moderator. I wouldn’t expect a SafePac  alone to do more than a few shots. As I was doing my initial testing, I was filling it to the various pressures that I thought would be good to use with the Crosman valve. At 1400 psig in the SafePac alone, I’d only get two shots that were worth anything. The guy that sold the SafePac said the 2260 version had about a 30 cc volume. I always believed that the SafePac was just a convenient adapter that would need some external air supply to do any good.

It's not looking too good for my safepac. I have a parts list for Crosman, looks like I need to add a 2260 tube and fill assembly. Maybe the safepac would work better for co2, but I don't want to go that way.  I'll get a heavier hammer spring and try it but looks like I'm going back to co2 till I get parts together. Thanks for your help fellas

I’m going to be listing my 2260 SafePac and the bottle with the 1400 psig regulator here in the classified in the next couple of days. I want to buy a dedicated PCP rifle now.

I think you're probably right. I can see it working good for a 2240 converted to a carbine and run on bulk co2. With the gun tuned for shot count with an SSG, I could see having a lot of shots on one fill, but I'm going for HPA, not co2.

Roy of Mountain Airguns sells Maximus tubes cut to any length for $90.

Not too sure if Don Cothran still sells 22xx PCP tubes, but he does have them in C02.

I had misgivings when I saw how small the volume was,  but I wouldn't know till I tried. Well, I tried, the carbine is going back to CO2. I'm not into shooting tethered, I'm not a bench shooter, so it won't work for me. I have a friend that is interested in messing with it, he can have it.
I made an offer on a PRod and it was accepted, so there's my carbine. The 2240 carbine will be fine for plinking away some time.

That's a cool setup. I was hoping for a decent shot count for plinking and roving, but the safepac isn't the solution I was looking for. I'm placing a parts order with Crosman, I'll order the appropriate parts to convert the 2240 to HPA. My fault it's gone wrong, I couldn't find any info before I bought it. Oh well, lesson learned. And I'll have a tinkering project for next winter, always a good thing
