Ok, so I'm looking into buying my first PCP. I want something smaller and compact which is why I've decided to look heavily into the P-Rod. However, I want something quiet and powerful. If I got the disco I'd for sure get the TKO brake for it. I know with the disco, it can be tuned to shoot harder which is a benefit. And even stock I think it shoots harder than the P-Rod.
So I need some advice.....can the P-Rod be upgraded to shoot harder as well? How quiet is it? I'll be using the gun for primarily hunting small game (pigeons, starlings, squirrels, crows, etc). I'll also be in an urban setting at times and need something ultra quiet. I want to make sure I have enough ft/lbs to reach out to 60 yards with a one shot headshot. Will the P-Rod do it? Is it the better choice of the two?

Please help, I need your knowledge!

Get a Disco and cut the stock down to a pistol grip. Much more power available out of the disco

Prods not as quiet as the mrod. Course the mrod weights a ton by comparison. Now my disco carbine is light and pretty quiet with a TKO. Both can be tuned to shoot harder but your probably going to give up shot count to get power.

As a P-rod owner, I would recommend the Disco.
While the P-rod is a cool, but pricey gun, it's size is a hinderance for power and range. Tuners and accessory machinists have made the Disco a very potent and diverse platform, while the P-rod is still basically in the R&D mode to try to wring the most out of it.

While the PISTOL mantra doesn't really fit its size, the range surely does.

Thanks for the advice guys. Dangitt, why can't a manufacturer come out with a less expensive Edgun replica? It's the perfect gun.....small, quiet, light, accurate, powerful, large tank, lots of shots, etc.....

Dave, how did you make your disco carbine? What mods does it have?

I think I'll lean towards a Mac1 disco then. With a tko shroud it will be quiet enough I think. However, it will be a longer/bigger gun with that shroud. I do like that I'll be able to increase the power of the disco.
I'll be pumping whatever gun I get, I have an FX pump. So in that regard, the disco would be the easiest to pump.

I own both and for the shooting needs you described I'd get the Disco and slap a TKO on it.

Even though the PRod runs higher pressure than the Disco, the longer barrel of the Disco and longer air tube will always give you more power and more shots.... stock vs stock, or modded vs modded.... If you were able to get 30+ FPE from the PRod the shot count would be dismal.... If you don't need the compactness of the PRod, I'd get a Disco and fit a TKO....

The disco can use the 1377 trigger setup I think..

I can say this about my disco I love working on it just as much as shooting it in stock trimer with jsb 15.9gr pellets I think I'm around 25fpe, I know in stock trim it was either a cphp or a 15.9jsb that I shot and chronied at 829.6fps..

There are other options as well. BSA Ultra is a short 18FPE gun that gets about 20 shots. Evanix TDR is another short one, about 30 fpe and 10 shots. Then there's FX Verminator 18 FPE gun that gets a huge shotcount with the rear bottle and front tube. A good moderator will make them all quiet and is better than a shroud in general.

my PROD- if ultra quiet is your goal there is no comparison if you put the gaska shroud extension on but there are trade offs.60 yards can be done but it is at the max of this guns range.

these were taken out to 55 yards via rangefinder with 14 grn h+n trophy targets also see varmint airs blog.

my 177 disco with tko good to about 50 yards but louder than prod by a noticable amount

my 22 disco much louder than prod but shoots to 80 yards. i also have 2 mrods 22,25 with the 22 having gaska exstension and being the quietest of all and shoots out to 100 yards but its long and heavy 11lbs

best do all gun prod

captwoody, thanks for the info and pictures.....but now I'm really torn!

I'd like to purchase both guns guys....but right now it's not possible. One or the other for the time being.

I want .22 cal for sure. .17 is not an option. I want the knock down power of the .22
captwoody, where do I get the gaska extension? If I get the disco with the 7.5" tko, will it be super quiet? Or would it be better to get the gaska extension for the .22 disco?

That Prod looks disgusting btw. Very tempting to purchase that gun with the gaska extension and that AR stock, especially if it's quieter than the disco with a tko shroud.
Is that gun more powerful than stock or were you taking those pdogs at 55 yds with stock power?

More powerful than stock only internal mod transfer port drilled out to .110= 1/8" With 14grn h+n's i think its 740 fps but i am at work without notes. gaska exstension is for shrouded marauder barrels only it adds baffles and length to existing shroud.

opening a can of soda makes a louder noise then my disco with tko.. esp after i depinged it

Both these are pretty close. Id say the prod is just slightly quieter.

Think the p-rod could be made to be quieter (which is fair...you'd spend some $ making the Discovery quiet, so as long as we're counting add-ons, may as well count one for the P-Rod). Even with the P-Rod's short barrel, are still comparing a lower powered PCP against a higher powered one.

For a first PCP (and for a great hunter for those who have several) the Discovery is still probably the best choice out there. Easy to fill with a pump, massive numbers of refills for tank fillers, long but quite light weight...works for me.

Ok guys, I just pulled the trigger on my first very own pcp! I saw it on American Airguns classifieds. It's neither of the above, but I couldn't resist.
I bought a used BSA Sportsman HV in .22 cal. It's got a shrouded barrel and a depinger already installed. It also has a power adjuster. It shoots 15.9 JSB's at a consistent 850fps. I've been told it's quieter than the Marauder. I like the looks of it and it's smaller/lighter than the Marauder.
It's also cheaper....I got it for $329 shipped! That's not much more than the disco after adding a TKO brake.
I'm so excited! I can't wait to get it. It's coming with the factory fitting so I hope I don't have any issues connecting it to my FX pump so I can just start shooting and pumping as soon as it arrives!

Anyone have any experience with the Sportsman HV? From my understanding it's identical to the Gamo Dynamax
