R7 Velocity Check

Do these numbers look appropriate?

Note:  Both pellets felt a bit loose. I can try the 4.64 FTT in 4.52 & 4.53 size. And the JSB 8.44 in the 4.53 size and see if a tighter fit increases velocity.

My R7 with ARH kit shoots 8.2 gr Norma Wadcutters at ~656 fps with an SD of +/- 3 for 7.84 FPE

My HW30 with ARH spring & Vortek seal - H&N FTT 8.64gr, 4.52 head size, average velocity 607 fps, 7.10 fpe measured with FX Chronograph. That was last summer marking a year after installation. I have not tested this year.

I get about 640 fps with JSB 7.9 gr pellets. My HW30 has the original spring from 2017 and has had its piston seal replaced. I wouldn't want to guess how many thousands of shots have gone through it.

Yes, that looks like standard R7 power.  Mine has a Vortek kit and shoots JSB 8.4s at about 6.8fpe.

Depending on what year the R7 is those velocities might be normal to a little low. In 177 the FTTs will normally make considerably less power than the 8.44 JSBs in Weihrauchs. Increasing head size will likely slow it down more.

If you're looking for more power and velocity try the JSB or AA 7.33s they usually make the most power and have the best accuracy in my three Hw30s. The newer model R7 / Hw30s should make closer to 8 fpe with these pellets.


All three of my 30s have Vortek kits and piston seals in them. They all make 8+fpe very nicely. That's at 600 feet above sea level. That reminds me if you're at a much higher elevation you'll naturally make less power than those near sea level.

When my guns drop below 680 fps with the 7.33s I take them apart and fix them. I like them around 700 fps.

If you're happy with the way your gun is shooting ignore the numbers and enjoy it. If you need every bit of available power for pesting there's more to be had.

Ron thanks for the info. I re-shot the chroy and my fpe is 6.84 with the JSB 8.44 and velocity is 604 fps. I will try the lighter pellet. Think I have part of a tin left.

My Vortek kitted and sealed Hw30s shoot the JSB 8.44 around 640-650. I believe originally it was in the low 630s with the 8.44.

The little guns are more efficient with lighter pellets.

You may also have a broken spring. The spring on my first one broke with in the first summer. I did shoot it a lot. I kitted our next two 30s immediately because they shoot so much nicer.

If you hear a crunch, pop or creak noise when cocking the spring may be broken. If you take off the stock and look through cocking slot you may see the broken end nested in the spring. They usually break at the trigger end.

Paull Watts tuned it for me. I don't know if he changed springs or not and if so what spring he used. I assume ARH. I lost my book with the original chrony stats after it was tuned. Everything is quite and smooth. No issues cocking or starange sounds on firing. Perhaps Paul tunned it low-don't know. As long as it is accurate at 25 yards and the backyard, I will leave it alone and keep an eye on the velocity. If it drops much then i will replace the spring and piston seal. No point in trying to make it an accurate 50 yard AR. I'll just mess it up. I may be happy with the LGV .22 with 11.44 fpe using 8.44 gr at 50 yards and if not then a great excuse for something in the 15-16 fpe range

I installed a Vortek high output kit in my Beeman R7 and it bumped me up to 724 fps with 8.2 gr H&N Sport pellets for a muzzle energy of 9.5 ft/lbs. Seems I lucked out on power. I just love my little R7.
