Trying to find out if 15lb felt is the basic industry standard....he says it is, I'm thinking 30lb is.
He also says my insurance claim states 3 tab, so that is what he has to use. My neighbors have put on Archatectual.............is that how you spell that?

Hi deanda, I feel your pain! Although I am NOT a roofer I went thru this about 6 weeks ago. Fortunately I had a great roofer recommended and he patiently answered all my questions and addressed my concerns. My home is a ranch style and required 32 squares. The difference in price to use architect(spelling correct) versus 3 tab for the job was around 400$. This is for a 30 year shingle. He said he uses the heavy felt and the lighter felt will actually tear while walking on it if one isn't careful. A call to Lowes or Home Depot could answer your question on that subject or go to ask.com and find it there.
My roof is basically straight with one wing off the center . Total cost was 5500$ and that included a ridge cap the entire roof. I only had a vent fan before and he removed it and filled the hole with plywood.
Good luck with the roof, it ain't cheep, that's fer sure. Any questions feel free to PM or post again.

Not a roofer, but I'm in construction. 15lb. felt meets the industry standard for code compliance, but that is the minimum. 30lb. felt is better. considering the additional cost to an overall roof job, it really doesn't mean too much in cost difference. Also make sure he is going to add at least TWO rows of ice shield material to the bottom of the roofline. Because of the overhang, one row will not meet code requirements of 3ft. over heated space. If he will not install the architectural shingles that you want( also for a slight up-charge) its time to find another contractor who will. I'm sure this is something you can verify with your insurance company. We routinely upgrade repairs for folks that have insurance claims and have never heard of a situation that the insurance company has backed out of a claim when the insured upgraded a repair at their expense.
Good Luck!

Thanks Uncle Paulie and Ray..............that information helps a great deal!!!!
He has told me that he will not give a list of the material that he is using............that's a pretty big red flag. I have 3 nieghbors that were upgraded to the 30 year at no charge by three different roofers.
Looks like 38 squares.........the first insurance check is 5800.00 bucks with another 3300.00 available after the job is completed......labor runs about 34 bucks a square, 3-tab about 65 bucks a square, architet....(you know what i mean) shingles about 80 bucks a square, not sure about felt yet............all seem to be prices for this area.
Doing the math.......should be overpayment by the insurance company for good quality materials.
Thanks again for the info guys.

Dean, again in MY experience, you are the go-between in this situation. The insurance company should be negotiating with YOU, you should be negotiating with the Contractor. In this situation, you should have provided the ins.co. with estimates from two or three contractors. Sometimes they will offer you an amount of money to get the work done based on what their experience in the area is with similar situations. They will then indicate there is additional money available should the job run "over". If the situation is one where the ins.co. is hiring the contractor directly, or has referred a "recommended contractor" to do the work, STOP THE PROCESS IMMEDIATELY! I have never heard of an insurance company that will require you to use their contractor exclusively. If the contractor is paid by them directly, he is going to take the money and then proceed to squeeze every penny he can out of your job by reducing the quality and cutting corners wherever he can. This seems to be supported by the fact that the contractor will not specify exactly which materials he is installing and how he is going to install them. Here in NJ, failure to make those stipulations constitutes fraud. As you say, the red flags are up!

Excellent information Uncle Paulie!!! That's the kind of info the average Joe on the street doesn't know. This is my first roofing experience, so I'm a rookie.
The people on the GTA are great!!!!
Thanks again Paulie!!!!

CDT just had a new roof put on his home. Believe me he made sure he had all his marbles lined up before he hired the contractor. CDT actually designed his home and helped build it along side all the contractors...
CDT knows allot about construction and design. He also knows all about the inns and outs of dealing with insurance co. and contractors.
You have gotten allot of good info here Dean and if you still have any questions CDT would be a great source for answers...
