Model 25

The 1077 with a dot sight on top was a hit with the kids. And shooting the reactive reset target.

Anyways. I’m really interested in a model 25. I don’t think I’ve shot a BB gun since I was 12.

How hot can they shoot?
Can they shoot .177 lead balls?
Are they easy enough to pump for a skinny 10 year old?
Trigger pull light enough?

I have a 1077 and an ASG Tac4.5. I vastly prefer the Tac4.5 but it only shoots BBs.


I have and older plastic stock 25, and it isn't too bad to cock. I'm not sure about the new ones though.

I have written many words about my Model 25 (got it in 1958, Baltimore).
It traveled the world with me finally dying in 2005.
Three tours in Korea, one in Vietnam and five years in Berlin, Germany surrounded by Russians.
When Daisy brought it back I ordered two.
One for me and one for my partner in KS.
I sent mine back.
I didn’t like the quality of the wood and metal (Others do).
I never shot it.
My friend has killed cowbirds by the 1000s.
BB guns (Daisy’s anyway) use a magnet to hold the BB in firing position so no lead balls.
But, it is a smooth bore so you can capture your BBs and shoot them again.
Get two…One for you and your 10 year old
A few years ago I found an original and I am happy again.

I’ve never seen a model 25 in real life.

Would it be appropriate for 10 and 12 year old daughters? Around 70 pounds, not very strong.

Length of pull, pumping effort, trigger pull, etc?

I cant speak to cocking effort for a child….but if u get one for yourself,,think about drilling out the peep and adding an adult red ryder stock…makes a good shooter a great shooter…. good luck…

I grew up in the San Fernando Valley before you were born.
Los Angeles was a different place then.
If you get the girls a BB gun be very careful.
They are not painted orange on the barrel.
Make sure they are supervised at all times.
They do require about 15-20 pounds of cocking force.

At their price point I cannot believe anyone would be disappointed in a new 25. When I was kid 25's could be found a fairs/carnivals all over South Louisiana , used for balloon popping games and shooting corks at bottles. Never saw one in a store back then. I now have two of the new ones, drilled the peeps out to .093" and shortened windage hold down screw  on the rear sight , this makes for more range in elevation adjustment. Both of mine have fantastic two stage triggers which only gets better with time. Yesterday I got out my Chief AJ Red Rider , had not shot it in a while. I did a trigger job on it years ago and it improved some but the triggers on the 25's have spoiled me.

A couple of years ago here on the GTA, a young man wanted a Red Ryder.
I told him if his mom or dad would bring him to Fairfield, I would give him one.
The young man (Eagle Scout in training) and the dad (Eagle Scout) came down and I gave the youngster a Red Ryder and the dad???
I gave him my Chief AJ Red Ryder..

The model 25 is great.
My only complaint is the rounded end of the butt stock, but that's an issue with most of Daisy's bb guns today.
I have been perfectly happy with the LOP because for me it's long enough while still allowing me to rack it back with the gun shouldered like a shotgun.
But I do shoit it from the hip a lot.

My dad bought one in 2012 and I got mine last year or the year before and we've both been extremely happy with them though I don't think he really shoots any of his airguns much.

The only thing I've done to mine besides drilling the peep out a bit ( didn't measure, just did whatever was better ) was to make a brass bead insert for the front sight, and a leather boot for the stock which grips my shoulder a bit.

I bought Betty Lou and I a pair of the newer wooden ones. I drilled the peeps out and we really like shooting them together. Just sit in lawn chairs and toss some cans out and plink away with an elbow rested on a knee.
It's really relaxing not to try to make pellet on pellet in tiny little holes. Just see how far out you can hit the can before you start missing.

David’s idea about the brass bead for the front sight is great.
I don’t have any of those so I used a push pin from the ol’ lady’s sewing box:

I love it. I fill the void in the front sight with JB weld then paint it with flat black finger nail polish.Can’t stand the gap in the folded sheet metal front sight, love the idea of filling it with something highly visible.

The 13 year old I have a big brother role to came over.

He had a good time plinking with the 1077. Then he popped his first spray paint can with the DF mkII in .25. Then he shot my daughters bow with her. Then he shot the Hatsan 87 that just showed up today.

He’s shot my Remington express in .25 before, but that’s a spring gun that I cleaned up a bit. Think D34 with a little of the twang taken out.

In comparison the 87 in gas spring is a harsh shooter.

All that to say, I’m going to mess with the 87, then give the 87 away, then I have a major financial thing going on so it will be awhile before I buy the model 25.

I basically made a tiny little brass tack out of a piece of 1/8"  brass rod from the hardware store, with a high polished domed head.
Because the gap is small I made the shank of my insert flat instead of needle thin and fragile.
It's the kind of thing that takes a bit of finesse to make though.
