Ok here goes... I just got the HW 97k in a .22.... My son has decided he wants one as well.. I really don't want both of us to have the same gun. I may give him mine and get me the .20... My question is does the .20 cal have the same killing power as the .22 for say like squirrel & crows ect? I just don't want to get something under powered for the job...

I really like the .20 but why not get a .177cal and shoot the 10.5gr pellets their cheaper and easier to get JMHO

Good point Mark, but here was my thought... My thought was to have something shoot a lil flatter than the .22 say like at 40-50 yrds... Thought I may take advantage of the xtra fps of the .20

I think the .177cal would shoot alittle faster than than the .20cal, they usually do! and will be flatter shooting than the .20 and if all else fails on buying pellets at least, you can go to WalMart and get Crosman pellets the 7.9gr the .20cal pellets are not always available to be had! they run out of stocks all the time and then you'll be sitting for a few months without shooting you rifle! This one of the reasons I sold off all my .20cal rifles + the cost of the pellets, the HW barrels usually like the H&N pellets the FTT's and IMO their to expensive $18 bucks a tin! and the Crosman 10.5gr pellets are $8 bucks a tin and are just as effective as the 11.4gr FTT's on game, don't believe the manufactures claims on velocity the .20cal 97 is gonna shoot 720's 730's out of the box with 11.4gr FTT's the 10.5gr CP will be in the 750+ from a stock gun! these are just my experiences with these power plants! It appears you have been rotating through quite a few rifles this past year or so. What are you left with now.....and are you more interested in 177 over 22 also....no hunting....more target? Den

Not really, I just have so many AG's I tend to thin the heard once in awhile, I'm more of a .22cal man but I do shoot .177cal quite abit, I've been getting into some 10m guns for shooting in my basement during the winter and use my other .177cal for long range bird hunting out to 100yds fur critters I use a .22cal or if I'm shooting birds at 80yds or less I'll use a lower powered .22cal like my Pro Sport or my HW97k or other guns I have in that power range but it really all depends on where I'm hunting and I know the area of range where my targets are gonna be at, I like to switch up cals when going after birds it keeps it challenging!

I like my dads .20 R9 over my .177 purely for the knockdown factor. And of you don't think there is a difference in knockdown power you will be sadly mistaken. .20 really is the best of both worlds and despite the lack of many types of ammo you generally don't need anything other than JSB or HN FTT.

I agree to a point but shot placement with a 10.5 .177cal will do the samething as the 11.4gr FTT IMO, I like the .20cal its magical IMO but I can't see paying the cost on the pellets anymore and it just makes more sense to me to shoot a .22cal over the .20 or a .177cal I have no problems doing what ever I need to do with the .177 or the .22cal JMHO

I always thought this disclaimer in AirForce adds was interesting.

"NOTE: The .20 cal. pellets are slightly longer than the .22 cal. pellets of the same weight. Therefore, they drag in the barrel a little more and produce lower velocities. The quoted figures (showing the .20 cal. gun shooting slower than the .22 cal. gun) are actual test figures and are correct."

They show the .20 cal 100fps slower. Does this really mean the .20 has a flatter trajectory?

It's a toss up. Why not stick with .22? Ammo will be a lot easier to come by. But the .20 should serve you equally as well. Just picked up an early RX in .20 and it has plenty of power. It really depends on how well the gun shoots for you.

Well if you want a .22 again and don't want the guns to be the same check out the other model 97's. There is a blue laminate , wood thumbhole , and the new Syn thumbhole.

Let's try this again. Whatever caliber you choose, find the Pellet that works best, and stock up on them,......especially if you choose .20 caliber. There are ample types of pellets in all calibers including .20. I used to get hung up on the 'why don't they offer so and so pellets in .20' , but in the end, there are a few different ones that will work in just about any .20 Airgun. personally I love the 5 mm caliber. I do agree with Mark on his defense of the .177 caliber. You can hunt with them as well as the other calibers within reasonable ranges. You'd be surprised what a +10 grained pellet can do out of an powerful springer like an R1, 350, or even the often considered "over-sprung" .177 Diana 34. I shoot JSB heavies in mine!!!:)~
I would recommend that your next Airgun be a different model so the two of you can enjoy shooting more than just one type of Airgun.

Some great theories guys.. All valid points. I may just get another .22 cal... It would be much easier on both of us to have the same cal... I was just trying to "get the edge". These youngins these days are hard to handle.

Just another idea but tjk has a good point about different model. You may want to look in to a TX200. IMHO TX and HW are two of the best made.

I think you two would enjoy comparing. I know I do.

About "the same gun". Even identical looking guns can be very different. One will like this pellet and another hate it, etc. I've found springers to about the most individualistic guns on God's green earth when it comes to this. If you're worried about mixing the guns up, personalize yours. Different scope, mounts, whatever. Or restain it. I do like those laminated HW stocks. Especially the blue.
