What do you know about the Crosman 2200?

I just purchased a very nice example from Mike Baker.  So it’s about as fresh as a 45 year old air rifle can be.  This one is running about 580 fps and making approximately 11 fpe.  I think  that is about what the factory expected.

I don’t know anything about this model of Crosman.  It’s not one that crossed my radar until recently.  I’d like to hear from anyone with knowledge of the 2200’s idiosyncrasies, flaws, or shortcomings.  What are it’s strengths and weaknesses?   I’ve tested about a dozen different types of pellets and found three that will group 3/4” to 1 1/4” at 15 yards.  To me this indicates that decent accuracy is there if I can just find the right pellet.  Any accuracy tips for the 2200? 

Does anyone know the history of this model?  Where does it fall in the Crosman chronology with regards to the model 1 and the 2100?

First came the 766...'75 to '82,forerunner of the 2100.
3 generations.... At least the 1st gen had a solid steel pump rod.
Also had 766W with wood furniture...VERY rare...

First gen (chrome) 2200 in '76 to '83. Tapered barrel shroud
Model 1 '81 to '85, 2 generations, basically a wood stock version of the 2200, Williams rear sight.
 1st gen tapered barrel shroud; 2nd gen straight barrel shroud w/plastic sleeve at receiver under the rear sight..
2nd gen 2200 '83 to '89. Painted receiver; straight shroud w'sleeve at receiver.
3rd gen 2200A '89 til end of production, dunno year. Straight barrel shroud, painted receiver.
There were also 2200W with wood stock/forearm ala Model 1. '97 - '03
2275W 75th anniversary edition in '98 (?)

2100 1st gen '83 - 2010
2100B '10 to... end of US production, 2021 or so. Non wood grain pattern stocks...UGH !!
2100W w/wood stock '97 - '03; 2175W  75th anniversary edition in '98 (?)
2100W had a receiver shaped like the 2200......like Remington 1100 shotgun.
Different from the plastic stock 2100.

Wood stock versions are beautiful and much sought after.....

All excellent pumpers with great heft and feel.
Weaknesses are few, most notable:
The plastic bolt will eventually break due to the stress of cocking the hammer.
The butt stocks have a sort of clevis arrangement, 2 ears with holes in them that fit over a post between the receiver halves.
These holes can crack, introducing varying degrees of wiggle to the butt stock. I have repaired many......
If your stock has ANY wiggle, it is a good bet that one or both holes have cracked.

Had a chrome receiver 2200 years ago. I really liked the rifle, though eventually I sold it hoping for a Model 1.

I finally got a Model 1 and it still makes me think of that chrome 2200. I haven’t done a ton of accuracy testing with mine as I just use the open williams site. 3/4-1 inch at 15 seems about rite though.

I have a V1 2200 (chromie) and a V2 2200 (1987).
Both guns needed barrel re-crowning. My V2 has a Canadian valve with the "bleeder" pressure release to keep velocities below 500 fps. I plugged the bleeder valve with a soldered-in brass plug. The internal volume of the Canadian valve is larger than the oem valve (because of the "bleeder valve" attachment it's a longer valve), so my V2 requires a few more pumps to reach the same velocities as the V1.
I find both rifles start to lose velocity after about 25-50 shots and need a drop or two of oil on the pump sponge in order to keep velocities up. The V1 shoots cphp at 630 fps on 12 pumps. I usually shoot it at about 500 fps. The V2 isn't as accurate as the V1 so I don't shoot the V2 much. I don't shoot either gun much since I don't like pumping and I'm pretty much a .177 guy.
The 2200s suffer the same issue as 2100s regarding the sight screws being too long and impinging on the barrel. You won't notice it, and your accuracy will be terrible. Shorten the sight screws enough so they don't hit the barrel when tightened. Both rifles seem to prefer wadcutters.
I replaced all the seals and valve internals in both rifles. Easy job. Much easier than the 2100 to reassemble. No bb feed mechanism to frustrate you!

I had contacted the dude some time ago.
He said we would get together on it, but never heard anything more.......

I've been bouncing emails back and forth with this dude.
First he wants to sell, then not sure.
He decided to attempt to reseal and assemble himself......
Innards look like they were coated with oil and rolled around in a pile of dust..really gunked up.
Last I heard from him he was attempting to clean up.

From the pics he sent I noticed that his bolt was broken........the boss on which the cocking lever pivots was broken
off the bolt and was in the hole of the cocking lever in a different spot in the photo.
I advised him of that and where to purchase a replacement, but have not heard from him since.

From what I recall from the ad pics, the stock was in serious need of refinishing.........

Guess I'll continue to wait him out.....
