Daisy 415 as snake gun???

I've been over in the Crosman section always wondering about 13xx v 2240 for a backpacking/boat gun for snakes. However, I dug out my 415 tonight and put a streamlight on the rail and have become re-interested in it. I put it away a couple years ago because it leaked but now it seems to be magically fixed. Maybe I forgot to put oil on the CO2 but I could have sworn it had an internal leak but hoping not (feel free to comment on these guns leaking?).

All that aside, I am thinking some sort of compact, multi-shot gun would be a better "snake gun" than a larger single-shot?

Only concerns I guess would be ricochets, and maybe less accurate vs one of the rifled barrel pellet guns. But this little 415 and even my 426 are quite capable can killers @ 10yrds so for a quick reaction snake gun in an area where a real gun would not be permitted, I am curious your thoughts on the matter?

If they made something like the 415 in a multi-shot pellet gun, that would be the ultimate choice. My 415 does over 500fps so I think I could even take small game with it if I had to.

I also have a G19 CO2 that does over 400fps so please comment if that gun has any advantage over the 415 (I have multiple mags for that one, but I'm an fps guy so the 415 is king).

The first five years we lived back here in the swamp I killed about a dozen cotton mouths a year.  Quite a few were killed with my 2240 making approximately 7-8 fpe with .22 cal H&N Crow Magnums.  Head shots are the rule most taken from fifteen yards or less.  Cotton mouths take a lot of killing and you're gonna need two or three shots.  Snakes have real primitive central nervous systems and one hole in the noggin is not gonna do it. I sometimes carry my Crosman 357 loaded with .177 wad cutters when walking the dogs figuring that a hail of small pellets is as effective as one or two .22 pellets.  So far I've only killed one pygmy rattler with the C357.  Pretty much pulped it with ten rounds of 7.4gr wad cutters. Most of my snake encounters have happened at very close range.  Under ten yards.  Don't waste your money on fancy sights.  Irons work best at snake busting ranges.  My current snake charmer is my .25 cal Hatsan Striker.  It only takes a couple of the fat .25 cal Crow magnums for any snake I've come up against.

I had one a few years ago and gave it to my son, also leaked. Not very accurate outside 4 or 5 feet.

The 408, 4408 package (?), also leaked, took a few days to a few weeks to empty, don't remember, rifled, has multi-round clips and I stuck a laser on the rail. It might have been suitable for that task but the weight of the laser partially tips the breach open. It wasn't particularly accurate either, but the clip's a bit short so doesn't accommodate all ammo.

They were on closeout, which I'd have to say was price-point, at least IMO.

Because of the leaks I never explored full potential. The 1377 would be much better if single shot was acceptable, otherwise I agree with (Captain) Carter on the 2240. That said, the quality control on the 2240 seemed hit and miss. I got mine on sale and ended up returning it. Nothing major, just wasn't looking to tinker with it at the time.

I don't know if it's a sign of the times or I'm just crotchety, but everything new I've put hands on in the bargain priced arena has had QC issues.

I found a mod video to increase the power of the 415. In that vid, it also mentioned using non-ricocheting pellets. I'm wondering if a lead/or other soft BB would be better for critter control than a steel BB? The steel probably will penetrate better up close but not 100% sure.

I have found that a 12ga. pump shotgun to be most effective.

I'd want something that shoots pellets, and preferably in .22.

If it's gotta be a new gun, that would be the Webley MKVI replica.
If it doesn't have to be new, there's the Crosman single action six and the early variant of the Crosman 38c which were .22.
There's also the Crosman 600 pistol but they command quite a premium.
You could also maybe just add a Gravmag to your 2240.

Been a long time since i killed anything….….but how about a 2240 with a gravmag…..I couldnt hit squat with my 415 ..until I put a B$R laser on it for indoor use…..as always pick the right tool/gun for the job…good luck…

I have found that a 12ga. pump shotgun to be most effective. 

I have a deringer that shoots 45ACP.   I use rat shot in it.  Fits in my back pocket like a wallet.  Great little snake gun for working in the woods.  I don't think I would feel confident with an pellet at close quarters on a timber rattler.  I have had them coiled behind trees as I walk past and strike at my boot.   I have also had a timber rattler slither between my feet while cutting a sapling down.  I will tell you with a heart rate set on explode my aim is not sniper mode so I carry my little pattern gun.   I let the non-venomous snakes go about their business but if they are venomous I don't spare the lead.

There is an expensive Webley revolver model 455 that is available in .22 caliber but my first attempt to find where it can be purchased only turned up England (America and England ... two common peoples, separated by a common language). I did not convert British pounds or EU or whatever...

It looks to be accurate, and super sturdy/reliable. Characteristics that come in handy if you have an aversion to being bit by poisonous snakes?

I did not find any other semi auto type pistols in 22 caliber. Strange that.

Mine seems accurate at 10yrds for cans, but I have not shot any groupings yet beyond a couple yards which it is accurate enough to hit a snake head at that distance based on the groups. People been killing snakes with ol' Crosman 760's w/ BB's for years so why not a BB pistol LOL.

To be honest, i do understand the use of the 415, especially at short ranges. Another cheap but massively overbuilt option, and my current "walk around the woods gun" is the umarex Brodax, a very nicely built (10 times better than the 357 or vigi... sorry crosman.) revolver that if matched to the correct BBs, (take your time and test) will return 430 fps for nearly 70 shots. But the accuracy is what impresses most. Mine with the black widows will do a 1 in group at 10 yards all day long, even with the non adjustable sights. TSC has them for 40$ i think, and I'll be hard pressed to find a better built gun at that price, or even double.
