Is a Daisy 880 a disposable gun?

Some 40+ years ago,my uncle bought me a brown 880 w/plastic stock. I only shot BB's because I didnt know anything about pellets. I got real good with this gun and could make some amazing shots. I had put a scope on it for a few weeks but took it back off, as I found that I could hit critters better without. Eventually, it stopped working & probably got tossed out by my Dad. He loved to throw things away...

Fast forward to 20 years ago and I decided to buy another because I remembered how accurate it was. This was a black one and is so off on accuracy that I gave up on it & put it away.

Jump forward again and in the last 2 years, Im bitten by the BB gun bug in a big way. I have a soft spot for pumpers, so I bought a Dragonfly 2 in .22 and love that gun. Ive had it apart several times & have it shooting very good.

But then there is that Daisy 880...I decided to see if I can get it sorted out, So I picked it up and gave it a pump.Then another. And another...  The air goes straight out the barrel w/every pump. Is a $50 BB gun even worth fixing?

I would have to believe that it is a plastic receiver 880??
And, you ARE cocking it first??

If the new style (aluminum pump tube) the parts are available from Daisy for CHEAP........
A seal kit is maybe a buck, the pump rod bumper is a 1quarter and the exhaust valve is $3.00.
Vert simple guns to work on..just use oil SPARINGLY, as over oiling will cause it to be unable to push air into the chamber......

Only you can decide if it is worth $4.25 + minimal freight ......

I fit has a brass pump tube, it'll cost ya  bit more......

Put some air gun oil in it. If that don't work do some research on the alcohol flush.

Careful about over-oiling......
Too much poil and the chamber seal will not permit any air to be pumpedinto the chamber........the pump handle will spring back open

Drop of oil on the bolt probe o-ring, wipe excess, without it cocked, pump arm fully open, 2-3 drops oil on rubber buffer, 2 or 3 more on felt, pump to distribute. Then see if it will build pressure by cooking and pump up a few times. If not stand up on butt for a day and try again without adding more oil.

Still not holding air, disassemble, but to answer your question, RESOUNDING YES, worth it and as already said, inexpensive to fix.

If disassembling, do tape mod. Don't shoot bb's in it, pellets will perform better.

I just oiled it and no improvement. Air pumps out of barrel end. If I open bolt, air can be heard there... Valve must be stuck open.

Could be stuck open...try a drop of oil where the stem exits the retainer..
If a bayonet stye (1/4 turn) valve, it is new style and available from Daisy.
If a hex head valve, it is old style and more expensive.

How old is the 880?  Could be the piston o-ring is toast.  You can replace the piston and tube seal (113) for pennies.  Chamber seals from Daisy are $0.10 each, so $1 worth is a life time supply for one gun.  Shipping will cost more than the seals.  If it is the poppet then working it in and out after oiling should fix it.  The poppets last a lifetime, very rare for one to fail.  If the pump tube is brass get with Ron for the abutment seal kit.

It is possible your first 880 was smooth bore, and the newer one is definitely rifled barrel.  Are you shooting pellets now or BBs?  Also not all pellets are created equal and not all pellets shoot accurately out of each gun tested.  I would recommend testing different make/model/weight pellets.  880s are usually very accurate even out of the box, but can be ragged hole accurate with a few mods.  I have found JSB match, and H&N pellets work very good in all of my Daisys.  I have tried other pellets that would not pattern well at all.  Particularly for me, pointed tip pellets have been inaccurate.  Dome pellets have given the best accuracy in my experience.  The 880s/822s/1977s that I have setup can hold less than 1/2" groups at 30 yards, with the occasional flyer, which I blame on the pellet and/or operator LOL.   I would not shoot BBs from a rifled barrel gun that I cared about.

Looks like you need to take it apart. There are threads (probably stickies now) with great tips and pics.

There's also some folks you can send it to that work on them, and a new one at WallyWorld won't break the bank.

You said it had accuracy issues when you quit shooting it, might be worth a try to lap the barrel and check the crown while you've got it torn down, nothing to lose but the expense of the lapping compound and some mops.

Regarding oil weight, the Daisy manual specifies nondetergent oil in 10, 20, or 30 weight. I’ve been using 10 weight without any problems. Gun bought new in March, with just under 3300 rounds shot so far.

Regarding the procedure, I had some Qs and talked to a tech rep at Daisy. Besides oiling the hinges, she recommended putting one drop of oil on the dark, absorbent circular disk (I don’t know its proper name), followed by pumping ONE stroke, dry firing the gun (yes, really), and then adding another drop on the disk. I use an eyedropper to do this.

The low price and plastic externals are misleading. I don’t consider the 880 a disposable gun at all. Although not a tinkerer, I’m tempted to do the barrel tape. The gun shoots well already.

This is good stuff, thanks Guys. My first 880 had a rifled barrel- I remember my uncle telling me that. I never shot pellets, I only had BB's, and it was amazingly accurate. In fact, I could out-shoot all my friends that had Crosmans back then.

This problem 880 is 20ish years old, but extremely low mileage. I gave up shooting it because shots were hooking low and left or right (cant remember) and couldnt hit the side of a barn. Now that Im into airguns, I will see if I can make it shoot again. This should be a fun project.
