'72 880 Smooth bore rebuild

So I tore down the absolute rustiest 880 I've got my hands on yet.

I used the original valve to see if it would hold pressure and suspected it was the problem.

So in the interim while I wait on receipt of a Ronno6 kit, I put in my 1991 seal, spring, setup.

Still leaking.  I mean holds zero pressure, leaks during the stroke.

So I suspect now, it's the valve body valve.  It's one of those round ones:

I popped it off (left some marks on the round valve  ) and it was full of oil inside.  I cleaned it out as best I could but maybe that oil was causing it not to seal?

Oil not likely to be the culprit....
Those valves do go bad..
The off the shelf hex screw in valve does not work...at least I could never get one to work...
The poppet is .040" too long and the sear doesn't open it enough to dump the air..
I hear there is someone who reshapes the poppet to get it to work......

I also have a giant rust ring in the metal tube...

Those Daisy 770 valves you use to make the 880 valves, that looks long enough.

Any idea how I can get in here and clean this rust out and polish it?

Me and a brass brush just ain't cutting it.

That steel tube is one of the originals!

That will pretty much ruin your pump's function.
If you have a shotgun cleaning kit use a 12ga brass wire brush on a cleaning rod....

Failing that, you will need another tube.......

Rust on steel will pit the metal not allowing the seals to...um...seal. Also, the pits will tear up the seals.

I agree, replacement seems to be the only option.

Yeah, I'm thinking this bad boy has had it.  I just wanted to recreate this particular gun as all original since it's a rare(r) smooth bore with all the earliest elements to an 880.

Does JG have extra brass tubes?

After the bronze brush has done what it’s going to do, wrap it with a piece of old flannel or t-shirt and butter it up with some JB non-embedding and work it some more.

You seem to be wanting to restore it to it's original build specs, so I wouldn't worry about rust. I would use the if that was the oem for thar year. But replace the rusted one. That's my opinion.
