Progressive lenses, S&W 78G

I took out the old Smith for some semi-serious 50 ft. offhand target practice.   I'm trying to see if my new progressive lenses will make it possible for me to shoot with iron sights.  It takes a lot of head tilting to find the sweet spot in the lens.   I think my iron sight days are over but I'm not giving up.

Man, it’s tough. At 50’ you’re right about the distance where I have to pick between seeing the target clearly or getting clear picture of the sights LOL. Depends on gun in my case too. With HW45 I hold the gun a little further out and it’s pretty good looking through my lenses. With the 2240XL and 2300S not so much because I have them closer. I put a peep sight on the rear of my 2300S and it works great. Allows kind of a modified taco hold.

That there *is* a sweet spot gives hope.  With the right eye doctor, they can figure out what single-vision or bi- or tri- focal with the right correction will work best for you.  Then you'll be using a bigger section of lens, not having to find that tiny sweet spot.  If you just get the prescription, relatively inexpensive glasses can be found online.  I've had good luck with Zenni.

My eye doc is a shooter and big time Winchester collector.   He gave me a prescription for shooting glasses but so far I'm too cheap to buy a pair just for shooting.   Yup, it makes no sense when you compare the cost of the glasses to the cost of shooting.

So, which one would make you a better shooter?  The glasses or all the scopes?   I went with the scopes.

Have glasses and still use scopes.

I've given up trying to shoot with progressive lenses. The Daisy model 25 is the only air rifle I shoot with iron sites, but if I could mount a scope  I would do so.

Not much you can do with astigmatism. The higher the magnification you need the shorter the depth of field. Tape over the lens with a pinhole trick can help. Get some cheap readers and experiment with magnification and aperture (hole size in the blinder) size.

Yup, I have astigmatism also.    Have done quite a bit of experimenting with cheap reading glasses and pinhole combinations for quite a few years while fantasizing that some magical combination will miraculously make me see as well as I used to see.   So far, no luck.   Today I'm fairly convinced that the progressive lenses are helping my shooting (offhand pistol).   How the progressives work with rifles offhand and benched, with and without optics remains to be seen.   There's still chance that I will just order the shooting glasses.
