21gr H&N Match pellet Question
«

I bought a standard un-regulated JTS PCP airgun and wonder at what velocity to shoot these pellets for accuracy at 50 yards? Adjusting the hammer spring is where I'll start (want to keep things simple). Also, would I be better off with 18gr JSBs? Love the gun, but want to extend the range a bit. Thanks!

Rick, use the ammo that shoots best in your particular rifle. But the extra 3g that the H&N Match gives you over the JSBs does help with shooting longer distances. I used the 5.53 version for shooting 100yd & 100m. They were quite accurate.

In my Airforce Escape UL, I shoot the 21gn Cudas at an average of 950 fps with very good accuracy at 50 yds and beyond. Of course your mileage may vary with a different rifle, but if the JTS has the power 950 will work. I also used to shoot the Cudas from my SPA P12 at about 920 fps and they were quite accurate out of that rifle as well.

That's what I thought. About 900fps with the 21gr H&Ns is doable . Just need to crank up the hammer spring and hope for a nice bell curve @ full fill. Thank you.

If you have a chrony you will probably find that a full fill is not your best option. For instance, on my Escape UL a full fill is 3000psi, but my most consistant shots come from a fill to only 2500psi, shooting down to 1800 psi for about 15 shots. I can get a few more shots at shorter ranges, but POI changes at 50 yards.

I did notice better accuracy when I got down to 2500psi shooting 50yd. Thanks--sounds like I need to experiment a bit. Its all for fun. Not hunting anything yet.

Pellets are not speed picky. Its more about match to the barrel IMO. My airacuda shoots 18 jsb and jts pellets lights out accurate from high 7s up above 900. Shoots the 21 barracuda match excellent as well, anywhere in the same speed range from what I've seen. I dont go above 900 with ANY pellet anymore, wind deflection just keeps increasing as the speed goes higher. Put the transfer port wide open, fill to 2800, put hammer spring about 1-2 turns in from flush and enjoy a quiet, accurate 40-50 shots on the money out to 50 yards

Much over 950fps & pellets usually get unstable. Especially nearing supersonic.
