300-55-HP---Easy to cast, accurate bullet

I think I found my favorite .300 bullet.


This one arrived yesterday.  After my first couple hundred castings, I am wondering why I even bought the pellet mold.  This one is so much more easy to cast with and loads in oring retention style magazines much more easily.  Metplats tend to catch the o-rings of my CARM .30 Mrod mags, not a show stopper, but a pretty big nuisance....

These dropped at 56.1-56.8gr.  Cast between 700 and 725F.  Weights were very consistent in spite of the fact that I have not yet assembled my pid/temp controller.  This barrel prefers sized to .298 and they sized very easily in a single operation. 



At 900fps in a TJ's 1:26 accuracy is looking good so far.  Distance is approx 100-102 yards



The 5 shot group on the bottom center bull is the tightest I've shot in a while.

 Heck yeah! I recommend anyone thinking about casting to start with slugs, in general, and a flat nose to begin with, before working into HP and pellet molds.

This is encouraging.  I did cast a few up a while ago but decided to move out of state right afterwards so haven't shot even one of them.  Hopefully I'll be able to test them coming up.  Attached is what my first run looked like with roughly a half grain spread.  I have only shot the NOE .30 cal pellets so far.  They aren't bad but hoping these are better.

My process isn't quite under control to the extent yours is.  I have yet to invest the effort to get a good process down for the NOE pellets.  I do ok with the .358's, but the .300's are not very consistent.  Next time i plan to try running the mold s bit hotter....

This evening I cast a couple hundred of the 300-55's, 70% or so ended up in the 56.1-56.5gr range.  Right now I am only sorting down  to half grain ranges.

They shoot decently all things considered.  I have only cast the hollow points, I have not tested any of the dimple nor flat point pins.

This weekend I hope to record some groups on a bore with >1k slugs through it, then clean and shoot more groups for comparison.  This bore has been taper lapped using both JB's/patches and the 3m lapping paper recommended by Todd at TJ's.  Then finished with Motorhead's Mother's polish and Trewax regimen.  It is likely closer to 2k or more slugs through it since last cleaning.  I prefer not to lube pellets nor slugs. 

Slowly working the kinks out of this contraption that was made up from a bunch of parts that were never previously assembled together.....this mold/bullet has definitely helped make the process more economical.  I don't want to think about how much i would have spent in JSB'S by now...

A quick note..  Today I cast and sized a couple hundred with the dimple pins, these weigh in the 62gr range.
