question about "rubbing" noticed in my model 34

I finally got the UTG mount and Weaver rings in place, got her scoped, and started sighting in today. It's a very accurate gun, and the UTG is a wonderful solution to the scoping problem I was having.

I'm noticing a "rubbing" when I cock the gun, which I know shouldn't be there. It doesn't feel mechanical, but feels like grit or dirt. I removed the stock and cleaned up everything external, but I don't know how to clean where the cocking arm (?) slides inside the compression tube, and honestly, I'm not even certain that this is where the rubbing is coming from, but it's my hunch. I don't know all the terminology and parts that I need to know yet, so my apologies if I'm calling parts by the wrong names.

Hi Lizzie My 34 pro was the same way. Try some moly in the cocking slot. Did the trick for me.  Dustin

Hey Lizzie,

Just a suggestion - try applying the moly grease with a small paint brush
like those used for arts and crafts projects. They are cheap and the small
size allows you to get just the right amount of moly precisely placed.

It could be a couple things..
The cocking arm sliding along the cocking slot, if you did not deburr it it will grind at about the half way point at which the cocking arm is at its most extreme angle.

Secondly it could be the cocking arm shoe hitting the spring coils if the spring is canted.. for this a piston sleeve corrects it.

For the cocking arm deburr the shoe and slot with a dremel and rubber polish bit then apply moly, it will be butter smooth.

IIRC Lizzie you requested a photo of my RWS34P with the UTG scope mount we're both using.  Works good for me also-good luck on getting your RWS34 quiet.

Might want to look to see if there is any wear at the pivot bolt too (galling).

Thanks Smackey54- I would be surprised if it's wear at the pivot bolt area, because judging from the looks of the gun, I doubt it was ever even broken in when it was originally purchased. I'm thinking it may just be years of sitting unused and old dry lube/dust, but I could be wrong.

I suspect you're right...especially if you can see no galling around the pivot bolt. May just require a little bit of carefully placed moly ....as others have suggested.

If your piston does not have a sleeve in it you may be feeling the shoe bouncing along the spring. With my 34 you don't feel anything at all when you cock it except the click of lock up and the tension of the spring. The slot the arm/shoe slides along needs a real good polish job on both sides. If you take the gun back apart you can try sliding the piston in and out to see if the skirt is giving you that feeling or leave the spring in loose with the trigger assembly out then move the arm and shoe up and down the slot to see if that is the noise maker. It is possible the pivot or just the fore-end stock forks could be rubbing the breech block as well.
