My new (to me) Marauder observations and questions

I have had the new gun for a few days now and although I haven't had a chance to do a lot of shooting with it yet but I will say one thing, this thing is quiet. I mean barely hear it quiet. It actually makes me wonder if it is even spitting the pellets at an appropriate velocity. Since I don't have a chrony I am going to have to divise some other way to determine if it is shooting fast enough. I was thinking that I could test it against my NP XL and even though I don't know exactly how fast that is shooting it would tell me if it were in the same ballpark. Maybe it is just my mind getting the best of me but I guess I just wasn't expecting it to sound like it does.

As for accuracy; Again, with the limited shooting I have been able to do I have been able to determine that with an less than perfect rest, on a fairly windy day, it will put 5 CPHP's in a touching group (maybe .5") at 20 yds. Not great I know but under the circumstances I am not concerned. I know it really doesn't tell me much at this point but at least it is not 2" at this distance.

I am getting 3 clips from ~2900 to ~1900. Is this about average for these?

I really need to figure out some way to assess the tune state of the gun. I wish I knew someone around me with a chrony. I just can't swing one right now and it seems like the only way to assess the current state of the gun, and/or make any changes. I guess for now I will just have to shoot it more and get the best performance I can out of it where ever it is tuned. 

Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.

Jeff I can say the XL's in .22 seem to stay at around 890 to just a bit over 900 fps using a 14.3gr pellet from post's here(pretty steady number from all), On the 30 shot's(3 mag's) using 1000psi in the Mrod that is what I'm getting in mine also, I'm shooting again a 14.3gr pellet an it is shooting around the average of 914 fps, the tension set screw in mine is alittle loose so the hammer throw creep's longer an the fps go up to 935 an I see the air useage go up along with it, so I guess to make this shorter you "could" do a penetration test with the XL as a base line for the speed of your Mrod, as for the sound of the Mrod firing well that is what they are known for, being quite.

Hammer Spring preload
Hammer Stroke
Valve metering screw

Or are the factory settings listed some where?

Thanks for the input Jay. It looks like there is going to be a bit of a learning curve for me withthis gun. From what I have been able to shoot it so far I really like it but I just want to make sure that it is performing as good as it can (within reason)

I think your gun is shooting faster than stock by how much air you are using...I get around 40-50 shots on a similar fill.

Here are my Settings:
velocity screw: 3.25 turns out CCW from fully closed
Hammer tension: 1 turn CCW from full preload
Stroke : 1 turn CW from full length



these settings give me 28-29 fpe with 14.3, and 32 fpe with 18.1 jsb

Hey Jeff, hate to say it but the best way to baseline your gun is with a Chrony.  I'm like you, don't have one yet but am convinced I need one just to see what my gun is doing, too.  I have seen a number of posts listing stock settings on their guns and they differ somewhat.  I don't think there is a certain standard other than speed (fps) and air usage as they come from the factory.  Others may chime in who know more about this.

My recommendation is to just shoot a lot and get to learn your gun and what it is able to do with the current tune as it came to you.  When you have saved for the Chrony, then I would begin making changes if you desire.  

I loved mine and never felt the need to make any changes.  She sure shot sweet.

Remember the two adjusts on the back both effect the pressure it wants. I like to run 2500 psi and make sure the first 15 shots increase in speed. You cannot accomplish that with no chrono.
Once you map the thing and you like the settings don't touch those rear adjusts anymore. Go to the port restrictor to make power changes so your always using the same air pressure and it is the port restrictor that determines how many shots your gonna get per fill.

I agree, each gun require's a different set up to get what you want out of it as there is to many variable's in spring strength, starting pressure's an so forth between them, what I gave you Jeff was to be able to just make a "guess" at the vel. you are getting now with your Mrod from a guessed at vel. of your XL. Without a chrony you will never know if it's a better or a worse set-up you are getting.

Chrony.
They are all a bit different so your will very, the "turns" given are a start & it's not like you couldnt get hunting group close wit out one but you do need one. And, sometimes the adjustments move! Nice to have achrony that day!
