Avenger .22 Twist Rate.

OK something a little different.

So the twist rate on the .22 avenger is supposed to be 1:18......... I have one bullpup that is as stated. My two other .22 avengers are slower, much slower like 1:30! So what do I do with these. They shoot pellets fine because they need little to no spin but what do I do for slugs besides not shoot them? Shoot 17gr ones at supersonic speeds just to stabilize them??

I am already waiting (and waiting, and waiting....) for a new warranty barrel from AV due to poor accuracy for my wood avenger but the referb plastic one I got recently is the same.

This would probably explain why some people shoot slugs like they're lasers and others have trouble getting any to work well.

I've also attached pictures to show the difference between a 1:17 LW polygon barrel twist and my avenger barrel twist (or lack there of).

It is unlikely that, if the twist rate is one turn in 30 inches, you will be able to get a satisfactory stability factor (should be around 1.5) for slugs. The very short slugs may manage to be stable, but it will be marginal and thus not give the best performance.

Shooting the slugs faster will not make them more stable, in fact it is most likely to do the opposite unless the speeds are high supersonic.

Wow! I've never seen lands and grooves so straight in a barrel, that is sure weird! The machine must not have been turning the barrel as they pushed through the rifling. Definitely should be warranty for such a goof up. They need to do a recall on that batch.

Yep, I passed up a good deal on an RTI Prophet a few weeks ago because it had the LR barrel.  Twist rate was 1/31 IIRC, and I wanted to shoot slugs.

Oh boy. I just received a wood stocked AVA the other week and haven't been totally blown away by it.
I hadn't thought to check if there was any twist, but who would? Guess that's next on the agenda for tomorrow!

You can't see the whole barrel in this photo. It does twist 3/4 of a turn from one end to the other.
