Can’t find a pellet that won’t group under half an inch. (long and pics)

Bummer! LOL.

Tested the .177 CZ 200S (the Red Gun) to find what pellets it likes to eat. The Red Gun is straight out of the box and a Hawke 6-24x50 scope perched on top. Scope is just about as big as the gun. 

In a nut shell, it likes just about all the pellets I have.

It will easier to tell you the only pellet that didn’t group under a half inch at 15 yards. They are the;

Gamo Raptor at 1.98”
H&N Spitzkugel at .7”

That’s it. Out of 16 different pellets, that was the only two over half an inch.

Okay, I know you wanting to know what the best pellets were at 15 yards. Well the top six groups were so close together that any one of them could be the best pellet and they did out shoot the shooter (me). I would have loved to have this gun back when I was a kid. I would be rich and famous by now. Oh that’s right, they didn’t have 3k bicycle pumps back then.

Top pellet for the 15 yard dash was the H&N Baracuda Match Ex Hy 10.6g with a 4.51 mm head. For a five group average, it averaged .12”. The groups ranged from .05 to .17 inches.



Not bad for an old man.


The second best was the H&N Baracuda Match Ex Hy 10.6g with a 4.50 mm head. For a five group average, it averaged .13”. The groups ranged from .09 to .18 inches.



Almost did it again.


The third, fourth, and fifth best were a tie at .14” group average. The JSB Match Ex Hy 10.2g with a 4.52 mm head, the JSB Ex Hy 10.2g. (head size unknown), and the Beeman Kodiak Match Ex Hy 10.6g (head size unknown).  At .01 inch, the Beeman Kodiak Match had the smallest group of all the test.




I better give up while I'm ahead.


The sixth place (which is the fourth best of group average) is the JSB Exact 8.4g (again head size unknown). The group average was .16”.

I did shoot the Beeman Kodiak Match Ex Hy 10.6g  pellet over the F1 chrony, so here’s the numbers;

Average velocity; 699.7 fps
Average energy; 11.5 ft lbs
Extreme spread; 21.7 fsp
Energy range; 0.7 ft lb
Average deviation; 5.2 fsp

Wow, my eyes are crossed from all these numbers. Okay let lay off the numbers and do a little review on the CZ 200S.

When pulling the gun out of the box, first thing I noticed was it was short and light weight. I already had read that, but nothing is better than having it in your hands. I like it.

 Here’s a tip for new buyers: make sure you order an adaptor from DIN to male quick connect when you order the gun. I didn’t have one so had to wait two weeks before I could shoot it.

First and only dislike is that you have to screw the air reservoir off the gun to fill it. It’s not hard to do, but would be a lot easier to be able to leave the reservoir on the gun. You could remove the gauge at the end and put a quick connect.

Speaking of the reservoir, it sure looked small because it is small at 122 cc. I’m use to bigger guns.

However that small reservoir holds a lot of shots. Starting from full fill of 2900psi (200bars) it took 85 shot before the power fell down to a noticeable level with a stop pressure of 1160psi (80bars).

From the first shot (at 741 fps) to shot #43 was a steady climb to 787.6 fps.

From shot 43 to shot 58 was pretty level. Shot 59 to shot 85 was a steady drop. Shot 80 still had 740.3 fps (almost the same as the starting shot) and shot 85 was doing 705.7 fps. The fastest shot was #57 doing 803.3 fps. 

The Red Gun seems not as loud as my other PCPs, but with my bad hearing, I can’t really tell.

I like the stock shape, it fits on the shooting rest bags real nicely. You can take your hands off the gun and it stays put.

The trigger is not bad. A trigger has to be really bad (like a Gamo) before I notice it.

After the new .22 Talon SS (the Blue Gun) gets tested at 15 yards. I will walk the targets out to 30 and 50 yards and post on what I find.

I wonder sometimes if a pellet came out of the barrel.

One pellet groups would be fun if you didn’t have to change the target out so often.

When you go further out I bet you start eliminating some of those pellets.

I have a 22 cal AA S200B and a CZ 200S .177 these hammer forged barrels are the LEAST pellet fussy barrels I know of.

If only CZ would step up a notch with a new model in higher power with barrels just as good they would a force to contend with and force everybody else to improve or fall behind.

Beeman kodiak is the same pellet as H&N baracuda. The gun sure has some potential in it, keep shooting

i bought the same gun and have the same results but use the wally cphp because of price. and i like that i get 40+ shots a fill. i also have the aa s200 in 22(same gun) and have only shot hn ftt out of it. i love pickin off little plastic police men with it at 30yds. lol. they are not powerful guns but very accurate

The CPHP were seventh place with a group average of.20 inch. This makes the third gun that likes the CPHP somewhat and best of all, they are found at Wally World.

The Kodiaks are left over from years ago before I knew that. I quit buying the Beeman brand for the most part.

JSBs is the brand I use the most now.

I refill at about 50 shots. Just depends on what pressure I start at.

I use the JSBs for paper target work. H&N and CPHP I use for plinking. None of my guns (14 of them) seem to like the H&N FT, FTS and FTT pellets very well. In fact the FT are one of the worst pellets in a couple of them. H&N Spitzkugel and Crow Magnum are useless in all the guns.

Now that H&N (Pyramyd Air) has a choose of head sizes, I might find one that works.

Only thing I can say is I wished I would have bought it  years ago.
