Those design standards should become part of the local building codes for new construction in hurricane prone areas
Especially construction of communities vs individual one-off homes.
Of course, that would annoy the real estate developers (read as cut into their profits) and they would lobby against it

about rebuilding in Tornado Alley? What should we do about rebuilding along rivers? What about
lakes? What about flood planes? What about hill sides? What about earth quake zones?

Im not saying they shouldn’t live there…or any place…...just that rebuilding should be to better….standard….same goes for any place prone to repeated catastrophes…..@ some point u would think common sense would prevail… good  luck

I just built a shed kit and believe me, I didn't follow the plans!
I added extra corner braces, twice the nails for sideing, hurricane clips, and cross braceing in the rafters!
We get winds in the 50+ MPH gusts and I don't want to have to rebuild a durned shed!

When you are building a structure for yourself and you plan to be there for awhile, the smart way is to overbuild every detail.   General contractors are trying to make a profit.   They have a strong incentive to use the least amount of the cheapest materials, assembled as fast as possible and using the cheapest help.  I'm never surprised when those buildings turn to cr-p.   To be fair, over the years I've had a chance to examine some old and some new Florida construction in the Fort Lauderdale area.   A lot of older stuff is crappier than I would build a doghouse.   Newer hurricane code compliant stuff is pretty solid.   Of course if I were building it for myself, I'd take it beyond code.
