Testing the waters on the dark side.

After reading about the benefits of high pressure air guns, I wanted to give them a try, but the investment was daunting. $400-500 for the rifle, $300 for the scuba tank or nearly the same for a hand pump. I could not afford to buy more than one of these items at a time. The sensible thing to do would have been to buy a Marauder and run it on Co2 until I had the money for a tank or a pump, but the thought of relying on a scuba shop to fill a tank or all of that pumping turned me off to both of those options.  I was looking thru the GTA forums and found post talking about converting a QB-79 to HPA. I was hooked (---- you dark side!!!) and began investigating converting my QB-78 to HPA.

It turned out that this could be done for about $100 with a 48 cubic inch air tank and an umbilical. Once I figured that out, I took the plunge and ordered a Shoebox compressor. No scuba tanks or hand pumps for me!

Below are my gun that I have had for a couple of years with the new tank, umbilical and Shoebox.





I pressurize the tank to 3K and I can shoot all day on that. I was a little concerned about going over to the dark side and the sound of evil laughter that accompanied every bull’s-eye shot really concerned me until I realized I was the one laughing.  I have also noticed that I now cackle and rub my hands together as I watch my shoe box do all the hard work. I can only assume this behavior is normal and common to others on the dark side.
By the way…I was told there are cookies over here. I’ll send a follow-up post as soon as I find them.

only cookies are the ones stored on your cpu. who's got time for cookies when there are bulls eyes to be shot out.?

you do realize a disco with pump is 379 and to be honest the pump even at a even deliberate pace from 1000 to 2400 takes me less then 10 minutes and the pump doesnt even get past warm.. id prolly have done the samething minus the shoebox if i already had a qb78 and no other pcp's... but for an mrod id give hand pump a go for a few times at least but if it got to be just daunting for me to pump a mrod id invest in a tank.. just need a repeater breech for my disco and im set for rifles for i hope a year

im sure you probably read it in the instructions but be sure the air compressor is an oil less compressor and on mine i installed an inline drier on the shoebox inlet to help with moisture removal.Want to keep it dry as possible. Congrats as i love those little compressors!

i paid 80 for my tank and 60 for the rigging. so your quotes were way off. and you got a chinese gun. should have started with the disco but if your happy with it........

Ok, I have had a chance to do a little more shooting with the QB-78 on HPA and have figured out that the umbilical is unwieldy to use unless I am at a bench rest. When the rifle is charged and the umbilical is disconnected, I get about 5 good shots so when I take this into the field for my weekend grasshopper hunting expeditions, I will put the tank in a back pack with the umbilical hanging out to top off the gun as needed. Right now, the grasshopper population in the Sacramento Valley is sky-high and the shooting action is fast and furious!

The other weekend I came home with a sore left arm after defending the rice fields with my B-26 Springer!

I have a QB79 in .22 and a TF78 Bulked in .177 that I run bottles on. With a 13ci bottle I get about 55 shots in .22 and the .177 I detuned to 12FPE and get around 100.

Bottles are regulated and I fill to ~2700 PSI with a hand pump with no issues.
