Calling Bob and others interested in 30 cal rf slug - NOE Adding 55 gr. Soon!

Bob what is the likelihood you could design or scale up the .22 rf and .25 rf to .30 cal rf for a new slug design in 30 caliber. I think it would be a good slug to have and if we can gather enough interested people to get in on it maybe we can convince NOE to produce it?
I know I have been having great success with the rf slug in .22 and .25 through my mk2 impact 700 mm.

The .30 cal RF mold is the one I seek the most.  I sure wish this could happen with around a 47gr.

I had nothing to do with those, Al did them himself, patterned after typical airgun slugs.... That slug, scaled up to .30 cal would weigh about 67 gr.... Next time I am talking to him, I can mention that a .30 cal version of about 45-50 gr. is desired.... The problem I can see is that there would be no parallel body left at that weight.... The closest I have is this....



That is a FB version of my 75-79 BBT in .30 cal.... neither of which has NOE made yet....

 Something close to this would be great for AEA shooters, as they are .303, that or sizing dies and a mold that has some room to size down.

Thanks, Bob...That would be great!  Just wanting to be able to cast a similar .30 cal HP slug like is in the first image.  There are a lot of similar slugs on the market but there is currently no option to cast our own similar slugs like these.

yes Bob...the first image slug. That was the one i was thinking of. I don't see any info posted for that one.

Back roads, I agree slug Molds should be slightly oversized to allow for fine tuning down to what the gun requires without ruining the slug performance after slug sizing. I have in my case slightly opened up both my .22 and .25 rf molds so that after sizing they are where they need to be, and it has vastly improved performance down range.

These are the cats meow in my 22 cal AEA Challenger, extremely accurate just like they drop from the mold.



I prefer the cup points, mainly for a little more weight but the hollow points shoot just as good but much more finicky when it comes to casting them.

A slug like that would probably be perfect for my 30 cal Challenger.  Right now I have it turned down to shoot pellets because when I bought the gun there were no available slug molds for it.  It would probably sling that weight of a slug well over 900fps (where this style slug seems to be very happy).  I'm shooting them over 1kfps in 22 cal.

In this photo/string I have the power wheel turned down about 1/3rd of it's full power, it's basically an adjustable transfer port

this is what I came up with. a slightly oversized slug to allow for resizing back down as needed by end user to tailor to their airgun as needed. right at 59-60 gr hp

I added a poll.... FYI, the 218-25 scaled up to .30 cal would weigh 65 gr.... and the 249-39 scaled up would weigh 68 gr.... Lighter slug molds can be made, but the parallel bearing section will get shorter....

Does the design i have posted seem like it would be adequate and stabilize in an 1:18 twist that the .30 cal fx barrel has? 960 ish fps

I'm leaning towards a 50-55 grain. My thought process is we have 50gr pellets on the high end of commercial. A slug of the same weight should easily optimize the power of a regular airgun.

One other thing to consider is the LOA of the .30 cal slug.... The 54.5 gr. NSA is 0.355" long, while the 61.5 gr. is 0.395" long.... The 39 gr. NOE in .25 cal is 0.348".... When making your selection for the poll, please consider the maximum LOA you can use.... You are allowed to change your vote, and the poll runs another 5 days.... Dan, the optimum twist is about 32" for your slug design.... It would work fine in the 26" twist TJ's liner.... How it will work in an 18" twist is anybody's guess....

I voted 50-55 hoping to not shoot myself in the foot with that.  I am just wanting something I can still sling fairly fast.

I talked to Al today, and he did a quick scale-up of the 249-39 RF.... It came out at 62 gr. as a HP.... He will try and get it a bit lighter, but said that 55 gr. was unlikely to be reached.... I will keep you informed....

I don't see why a bigger hollow point wouldn't drop the weight more.  That said I'm not in the know.
