I can remember that I need to heat the spring to around 500° F for an hour, but can't remember how to cool it down. Just take it out and air cool it or leave it in the oven to cool slowly? Thanks and regards, Tom

I don't think it matters, as long as you don't quench it.... Compromise and turn off the oven and leave the door cracked?....

I tried doing a YT search and didn't find much. It depends on the type of steel more than anything. Music wire doesn't even have to be hardened or annealed. Also saw mig SS welding wire used the same way. Don't know if you are making a wire spring or a flat spring.

Normalizing a wound music wire spring I believe is what you are referring to. I have never had an issue with however I cooled them. I have even water quenched straight from oven, although most of the time, I do like Bob suggests and just turn oven off and open door till it’s cool.
