Diana Chaser SafePac Shot Strings

My Diana Chaser Kit finally came in a couple weeks back and I decided to add the SafePac to it and forego the CO2 altogether. My first attempt was a failure with chrony numbers sitting in the low 200 fps range, There was simple not enough hammer spring to get the poppet off the seat long enough to fire a pellet at acceptable velocity.

So, I took it all apart, stoned the trigger, got a bit of Moly on the contact surfaces, replaced the sear return spring with an ink pen spring, put the hammer spring in my plastic vice pads and pulled it out to the same length as my Bandit spring.

After reassembling it, adding a simple Cvlife holographic sight and then removing the barrel one more time to add an o-ring to the breech (sheese!), I filled the SafePac up to 2500 psi and loaded up 2 mags with Crosman Premiere Hollow Points, 14.3gr and shot a string just to see what it could do with HPA instead of the CO2.

I was thrilled that I could hit 800 fps for a 20 fpe wallop with a $100.00 Diana Chaser and will be the proverbial "Trunk Gun" that rides on the ATV gun rack while I am out and about. Next up is mounting a scope and seeing how accurate it is at 50m, that distance is much more telling for me to determine its actual use in the field.

I am buying a pack of McMaster Carr springs for the Dianas, https://www.mcmaster.com/springs/spring-type~compression/length~3/od~3-8/wire-diameter~0-048/wire-diameter~0-054/spring-rate~13-33-lbs-in-/ because I think a little heavier spring will keep me in the 800's for a magazine.

Now you got me thinking about this for my QB series rifles. I had made bulk fill valves for all three but sourcing bulk C02 from welding or restaurant supply shops and building fill “trees” made me go PCP. Love my QB toys but would love them to be HPA. Things were great when I could just go to Academy and get paint ball tanks filled, it’s easy to make a fill tree for those.

For me, CO2 is a pipe dream at best, even in my shop, I keep it at 50° when I'm not actually working on something. The guns will maintain that 50 degrees as well. Outside, we get about four months of good weather where the CO2 is working correctly, the other eight months, it's too cold to get any velocity out of CO2 guns. HPA was a definite must for the chaser for me.

 Same here too cold most of the year then too hot for a portion, seriously considering adding Safe Packs to a couple more of my CO2 rifles for sure. pistols can stay CO2 as they do not get shot as often as I am not a big pistol shooter, mainly because I can throw a rock just as accurate at pistol ranges

I'm pretty pumped about the foregrip sitting on my SafePac so that I can pull that button into my shoulder for a steady shot. The SafePac allows me to put that foregrip a full 8" further out which makes me very happy!

I have an update on the Chaser with the Safepac and the new spring. I did make a new hammer with a little larger hole to accommodate the new spring, it dropped from 50g to 40g (20% weight drop) and I turned the nose down to 13mm to fit the 14x1.5 O-ring I installed ahead of the hammer for a BStaley mod.

I charged the gun to 3k and loaded a single CPHP, 890 fps or 25 FPE out of a Chaser! No bounce, shot string is very short with 5 shots before falling off but 5 shots at 900 fps is OK in my book!

I loaded up 25gr NOE HP's and hit 800+ fps for 27 FPE for three shots before falling off.

I know, this doesn't sound like anything to brag about, only 3 shots but those are some good numbers out of a tiny carbine with a dead-on barrel!

Those safepacs have their place for sure. I made a couple from some crosmam 2240s. One was a 1740 actually. 14 shots at 14 fpe with an 18" barrel in an old 180 stock. It was a blast, nice and light. The other is an 18" 2240 in a sporter 262 stock I gave to my buddy for squirrels and such. That only gets 8 shots at 20 fpe but only a 2200 psi fill, super easy to hand pump.
That chaser is a little beast!

The O-ring where the valve couples is starting to squeeze out on mine. It's due to the 3k I power up with.

The supplied o-ring that came with the safepacs, I tossed those and went with a nitrile buna 70 for that same reason, they would squish out when fully screwed together. I also used a discovery poppetnin mine, but obviously different platform here.

Does the chaser use the same valve as the stormrider, just with a piercing pin?

I am not sure if it's the same valve but the piercing side just unscrewed and the safepac screws on.

Thanks for the tip, I will be changing o-rings anyway since the squeeze out is an issue and I want to open the exhaust a bit too.

I had one of those safepacs up to 3500 psi at one point, it didn't seem to hurt it at all. In case you were wanting to squeak some extra power out that way. Open the exhaust port, and install a lighter valve spring should be able to up the pressure. Might have to go up on hammer spring again, but the valve spring change would also help open it up easier.

Got the new hammer done today,  about 1/2 the weight of the old one, 18g vs 32g. Used a stronger spring as well, 7 shots in and something broke. I will take it apart tomorrow and find out what it was. The BStaley trick worked with the spring and light hammer, no bounce at all.
