Yes, I removed the star washers as they were chewing up the stock. Hardened up the wood using a some 30% w/v Paraloid B-72 acrylic adhesive I had on hand, put in steel flat washers, and then used nord-loc washers as recommended by Hector between the screw and the flat washer's surface. (Nord loc washers want a metal to metal surface).
Just curious but have you determined should your gas ram fail that you'll be able to source a replacement? Thats always been a concern of those for me whereas springs are easy to come by from many sources.

I experienced exactly yhe same problem. What was Diana thinking. G et rid of the star washers and all is well. DUH? No other mfg makes this HUGE error.
