Crosman 2100 for small game?
«

Hi guys
I was thinking of getting a crosman 2100 for hunting squirrels and rabbits. Is it strong enough for that purpose and what would be the max range to shoot one.
Thanks for your time reading this

IMO wait for the 362 to be released, but the 2100 can be effective out to 20 yards for most small critters.

I agree with the 20 yard limitation. This rifle is marginal in power for game of that size so shot placement is vital. The 2100 is still easy to pump while scoped.

The 2100 is a bit short on power for all small game (IMO). I have used mine on birds out to twenty five yards. It’s Okay for frogging but definitely too weak for snakes (snakes take a lot of killing). I wouldn’t shoot at a squirrel past twenty yards and then only head shots. The buzz is that the Daisy/Winchester 1976 is the bomb. Much better velocity than a 2100. Better accuracy and a better scope. I will be adding the Winnie to my collection eventually along with a Crosman 362.

The 2100 is ok to borderline on squirrels/rabbits, out to 20-25 yards...
On paper the 2100 should have no problem, but velocity isn't constant across every gun, the biggest issue (in my opinion) is there is no bolt o-ring. So chamber sealing may vary from gun to gun, I've seen between 6-7.5fpe at muzzle between three 2100's and a few variants all at 10 pumps using 7.9gr pellets.
This being said, I've used a box stock 1377 making just under 6fpe (Crosman Piranha 10.5gr pellets @ ~495fps w/8pumps) on chippers and red squirrel successfully out to 18 yards and less. Also have used the 2100 and legacy 1000 on red and larger grey squirrel out to 20-25 yards with ok results. It's more about placement than power.
Oh, and generally the (cheaper) Daisy 880 has more zip than the 2100 on average. There are exceptions, all depends on if you get a good one or not. The 2100 does feel more solid/less toy like out of the box. The one HUGE advantage of the Daisy pumpers vs the Crosman is the Daisy bolt handles don't soften up and become useless like the Crosman (2100, Legacy 1000, etc.) in direct sunlight and/or higher heat. At a certain temperature you won't be able to cock the Crosman to load properly.

The Winnie 1977 definitely has more oomph, but a very stiff trigger.
For larger small game a .22 has more knock down ability.
362 should be a good choice, or Benji 392 if you can spare a few more bux.........

Not to mix "gates" but why not pick up a Daisy 880s at Walmart for $36.99? No you won't get a metal receiver, but it's got enough power, and seems pretty durable to me. The scope is barely adequate, but mine is clear enough. Never zeroed the scope in, but mine is spot on accurate out of the box with Crosman 7.9 grain hollow points.
For my money I can't wait for a 362 in .22, but that (when it finally arrives) or a drifter too would work (.22 with a 14" barrel), should you want to step up to .22,. I just like the Daisy a lot, and at that price it's hard to beat. I think it's likely slightly better gun at 25 yards or so for small stuff, but as has been mentioned, .22 it probably more humane.
