New Benjamin NP is Shooting All Over the Place
«
on:

Got my rifle on Friday and I am a bit unimpressed with its accuracy. It is shooing 2" groups at best at 20 yards. I have only tried crossman premier 14.3 grain pellets and some daisy pointed pellets(it does not say weight on box).
So far I have only changed the trigger to the GRT-III trigger. The factory trigger is &^^&.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to GTA Forums j. Glad you joined us. Sorry you're having issues with your new NP. There's sort of a checklist for new guns. First, did you do a good bore cleaning with Goo Gone, weedeater line and patches? Secondly, check all nuts and bolts for tightness, especially the pivot bolt. Next, if you're shooting through a scope, check all mounting hardware to make sure it is locked down well. All screws should have blue locktite applied and let the gun sit for at least 24 hours for it to cure.
It takes several hundred rounds to get a barrel leaded in (seasoned) and for the shooter to get use to the particular gun. You have to experiment with not only different pellets but different holds to see which the gun responds best to. Try the artillery hold first then try a more firm grip. Move your foregrip hand forward and backwards till you find the sweet spot for balance and control.
If none of this helps, you may want to try a different scope. It's very possible you have gotten a dud unit. And if none of these suggestions help, I would recommend returning it for exchange. Crosman customer service is one of the best in the market and if needed, they will help you out. Hang in there and don't get discouraged. There's bumps in the road sometimes but they WILL smooth out.
Again, welcome and....
Happy Shooting!!!!
Dave

Thanks for the quick reply Dave. I have probably put at least 200 pellets through. I have run a nylon brush and some cleaning patches through it.
Where can one get the goo gone?

It's not a specialty item and can be found in the paint department at any Wally World Super Center. Or most hardware stores. Haven't checked Dollar Stores but possibly there too. Lowe's and other building supply stores carry it also. It's a common item.

I have the same gun and found that the 2 pellets you tried shot horrible in my Tail NP. Along with what Dave suggested, I would try different pellets. The ones that shoot best in my Trail NP are the H&N FTT or Beeman FTS.

My Trail NP shoots the 14.66 grain FTT very well. It also likes the 21.14 grain H&N Baracuda but they drop a bit after 30 yards due to their weight.

My NP took over 500 shots to settle in. Thanks to Perry, I tried the FTTs and they are far and away the best in mine. Just be patient and you'll be very happy with this airgun.

I just bought aTrail NP in.22 and broke it in for a week with the CRAPPY factory trigger. Installed a GRT-III "Tuna Trigger". Now for the last couple of days, it seems to really like 18-25g ammo. JSB's and H&N's. The H&N FTT 14.6g did very well on the light side.

Heavier pellets may be accurate in the Trail NP but the problem with shooting heavy pellets in a 18-20 FPE gun is the drop. The 14.6 grain FTT has a much flatter trajectory than a 25 grain pellet, less compensation makes for an easier shot.

Hiya Gents - I have some h&n ftts and some JSB pellets on the way. Hopefully that will help things out.

Crosman's were giving me fits as well, with numerous fliers out of the group. I tried Benjamin 14.3 gr pellets, and those gave me much better groups while still being affordable. Since both are made by Crosman, I can only assume that the Benjamin's are just CPHP's held to stricter standards.
