"Aim small, miss small" - Actually works!

I usually get 1/2" groups with my Stoeger X20 S .22 around 15 yards. Not very impressive in my opinion. So today I was plinking and decided to test out it's accuracy. I decided to try to shoot off the branches on the top of my pecan tree. Distance was about 30 yards off hand!
To my amazement I was able to hit the thin branches, cut them off, and send them down to the ground
I'm pretty amazed and happy with myself. Have any of you guys have stories to share? Inspirational, perhaps? Lol

Yeah, I was pretty happy a couple of days ago when I shot at my 106 ft target with the small ShootNC dots about the size of a nickel, and hit dead center first shot. It was a great mental hurdle for me.
Congrats on your success.

Sayings like this one, only survive if they have a dose of truth attached.
When I shoot the "Casual 50' GTA Rifle match, any position".....
I always get better groups shooting at the small 'sight-in' bulls on this target;
...
http://tomgirling.co.uk/hobby/targets/A4_15m_Air_Rifle_Target.pdf
...
than when I shoot at the larger 'scoring' bulls.
Wish this match task would catch on and make the regular monthy listings.
http://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php/topic,2242.0.html
Guess there is some truth in then Aim Small, Miss Small saying....

I find this works for me too. I shoot the round sticky circles that are around nickel size. I put a cross hair in the middle, or a bb-sized dot in the center with a pen and I definitely notice it tightens my groups. Its definitely a good principle to keep in mind while mentally preparing to shoot.

All my targets have a dime sized ring with about a 5mm dot in the center. So when I throw a can out at 35 yards I think dang I am a great shot I hit that 6 inch can every time! (GRIN)

I have an idea that is really fun. Get a glue trap for rats put it in the micro for a minute or so to make the glue more liquid.
Mix it with some sugar and brush it on to a white 8X11 piece of paper or the back side of a target.Tape this on to what ever you use as a back stop.
Put it outside so it will attract bugs and shoot at the bugs. You can't get a smaller target than a insect.

My favourite target at 100 yards is old pellet tins.... They are 2.5" diameter, and if you can put 5 shots into one without hitting the edge, you are shooting about 2 MOA.... That is the equivalent of 1/2" C-T-C at 25 yards.... ie a group you can cover with a dime.... Here is a 5-shot group I shot with my Grouse gun off the bench last summer at 100 yard....
It would measure about 1.5" C-T-C.... and I'm darn pleased with that from a carbine.... I was holding 3 MilDots high.... The gun shoots 18 gr. JSB Heavies at 700 fps (20 FPE)....

Shooting challenging targets is all fine and good as long as you still have a backstop to stop your pellets. I just can't imagine it being very smart or safe to shoot twigs out of the top of a tree with no back stop. Being safe when shooting is priority one. This of course is just my opinion and one I feal strongly about.
