I shot my first ground hog of the year a couple days ago with my AEA Challenger LS .22 using my 24.4grain cup point slugs@218 diameter like they drop from the mold.

Thanks Manny. I might take you up on that but I’m really tempted to try to open up the breech end of the barrel a tad. 

Have a Dremel tool and lots of polishing pads and some red and green compound but I don’t have any real knowledge of how to NOT mess up the gun when doing this.  Same thing with polishing the crown.

You should push a pellet down the barrel so you can measure and see what the exact barrel diameter is.

I just had a thought, it might seem harder to load the roundball because it's a bolt action. I'm used to using a side lever that has more leverage when it comes to pushing in the projectile.

 When loading slugs with a bolt action I prefer the actions that the bolt comes out the rear, so I can use thumb assist to set that lead in there.

I Was doing some pellet shopping and saw noticed that you can buy the Max in 45 or 50 cal, and the 50 cal shoots at 300 fpe.

108 grain nsa slugs out of HP Max from 4500 down to a bit below 3000.

For anyone messing with HP Max or similar:

I put a single hex nut behind the hammer.  It is the right size so that it does not touch the walls, slides freely along the guide spring but the spring can’t fit through so it is pressed by the spring against the hammer and moves with it.  It also has the effect of adding a little preload to the spring. 

Placing this nut added ~10 fpe when shooting 125 grain nsa slugs.  Went from 140’s to 150’s,  for those first few shots at 4500 psi.

I also made an externally adjustable hs for my varmint. It’s kinda tricky to do but not bad. It uses the guide rod to turn a threaded sleeve in the plug. And yes, that plug is an adjustment. Just don’t go so far the spring guide comes out of its spot.

A 3d printed collar would extend the range of that “power wheel” as far as one might want.  Project for tomorrow along with a single shot tray.   

Those mags are a hassle.  I have a little lube on the pellets I just cast and the magazine keeps slipping out of my fingers and launching across the room.  It seems like a solid mechanism just hard to keep it in place at first.  Some little grip or texture on the edge of the lucite piece would help

On one of my two magazines the allen screw that hold the clear face on rotates along with the clear face when it is rotated so it tightens up as you insert more pellets.    Guess I need a little Loctite for that particular screw


Had some arts and crafts time and cast a handful the slugs pictured (96 gr).

Locktite (and all superglues) attack and destroy plastic. You can't locktite that screw unless you want the mag to crumble to pieces.

HP max #2 arrived yesterday after the original one continued to leak after being sent in for repair.  The old one was serial no.150 and this new one is up in the mid 400’s forget the #.  They are nearly identical but the old version one listed two fill pressures and springs on the side and this one only has 4500 psi fill printed on the side.

It functions better however - smoother bolt action, magazines stay in nice and snug and don’t slip out.

The new one is holding air and shooting just fine. Maybe sn 150 was built by a trainee or something

And as far as the tooling goes, I have zero formal education in manufacturing and machining and it hadn’t occurred to me (though of course it seems obvious now) that the cutting edges wear down over time and the last gun made using a bit (?)  would be a bit rougher than the first.

Anyway, I knew the gun would need work and there was a lottery aspect to buying a budget gun produced in a Chinese factory.  Not a comment about the people of China in any way,  they are the ones making these nice budget guns after all.  one thing it makes sense to expect is that the manufacturers will not fuss over the guns and QC will not reject as many guns as it should. 

Bin (Tac) says there is a part replacement for HP Max guns coming from China.  I think i posted this somewhere already,  but the parts are on their way and have something to do with the way the gauge is attached to the gun. 

These pics don’t show much except the aluminum can on the end which was made by Neil Clague, which was really, really well made and probably should have been more expensive.  I wanted something to experiment with so instead of a complete LDC he was willing to make me this can and a couple of baffles.  With just two aluminum baffles and some 3d printed spacers the sound is greatly reduce and “garage friendly”. 

I am experimenting with different chamber sizes and inserts and wrappings to see if I can find a nice quiet arrangement.  I will not discuss the guts I guess since this is more of a pickle than a shroud, but I am happy to have this finely made canister and baffles to work with.  I have been wanting something like this to test
 prototype 3d baffles and cores.

I wish to find or make a lightweight stock for this.  The heavy ar stock is not a good match for this air gun and maybe I can rig something with metal or carbon tubing and 3d printed parts that will attach to the same 3-screw base the AR stock attaches to.

For the price of a different lighter in weight lightweight stock you could add a carbon fiber tank which will drop more weight than replacement stock+ add to the air capacity.
