Finally installing new spring, 2 questions.

Hey, I'm finally getting to putting a new spring in my old Diana 34. Got the busted spring out this morning, boy was it a mess! (Pic 1)
Question #1: It appears I need to compress the new spring about 4.25in to get the pinholes on the trigger assembly to line up with the holes on the body of the rifle. Does that sound about right? (Pic 2)
Question #2: Is there a hardware store lube that will get the job done? White lithium grease, silicone grease, etc? I think I can get a large tube of Moly locally but it will be way more than I could ever need. I'm not looking for ideal, just good enough.
- Mark
p.s. No, I'm not going to use the arrangement in pic 2 to compress the spring. I've got a much better and safer idea.

This is the only "moly" I should be able to get at my local hardware store: Extreme Pressure Moly Graph Grease 14 oz

If the spring was not set that is about right. When I buy springs from JM I pay the extra buck to have them set. It just makes it easier.

You may also be able to get moly from your local Honda ATV store. I have read it is very good.

s10gto, thanks for the info! Since I don't know what it means to set a spring, I'm gonna go ahead and assume it's not.
Unfortunately my local Honda ATV store is nearly an hour away. I don't make it to the 'city' very often these days, most everything we need can be found 5 minutes away in town. The price of rural living... worth every penny.

Looks like its not. That OK just makes it a little harder. Setting the spring is just putting it in a jig and compressing it for about a hour. You can get it in there and then leave your gun cocked and it will settle in too.
If you don't mind waiting I got some JM moly and tar.

Thanks man, but it's cool. I'm thinking I'll probably just spring for some proper JM tar and moly myself. Got two rifles and a second new spring as backup, it'll be a solid investment in my shooting pleasure. Small price to pay compared to the price of the rifles themselves.
I just like to find cheapo solutions that works just as well... but apparently nothing else does in this case.

If you order don't forget a seal. I used the large apex seal. Fit great.

Good to know about the "it'll get the job done" alternative. I ordered the proper stuff last night... probably should've thrown a seal or two into the order, but didn't. Got the piston out today, had no idea how easy that was to do! The existing seal has a tiny but of wear, but doesn't look too bad. Once I get the goop I'll get her back together and see how she shoots. I'll pick up some spare seals in the future.
What I do know it's that it is a dirty dirty rifle. Was my first and I didn't treat her well in the beginning. Very excited to be able to take it apart and give her a good cleaning and lube. Even happier that I bought a second Diana 34 (Compact Pro) and now have the knowledge to do some basic work on both.

(knock on wood... knock knock knock). Er... just in time for Earl to graze us... good thing it's a long match this month.
