New to me 54 questions...
«
on:
September 26, 2011, 08:41:10 PM »
Just did a trade for a RWS 54 and I think I am soooo gonna like this recoiless action.
1st, there is a pin that is so loose it drops out of the cocking arm piviot. What do I need to do about that?
(pointing at it with the toothpick)
2nd, does the ball detent in the recoil mechnism need to be lubed? Or the slides for that matter?
3rd, This is supposed to have a Maccarri kit in it, what weight range of pellets should it like?
4th, I have a new Swift air rifle scope I mounted up. It is going to live or am I going to need to find something
more heavy duty?
Thanks,

Are you talking about the main pivot pin for the sidelever? There should be a C-clip on it to keep it in.
I personally would not oil the ball or rails. May just attract dust. But if you really feel the need lube them very lightly.
Without knowing the exact kit it's hard to tell. Stick with 14 to 16 grains and you'll be fine.
Not sure about the swift.

I have not been inside mine "yet",but if it's pointing at the two in the base of the pivot I believe they are rivet's(but I could be wrong as like I said have not been inside of tube) but mine are pretty solid so a good guess. I did take mine down in the "rail" system an gave it a good cleaning an lubed it with FP-10, shot it awhile then wiped all excess off of block's an rail's, watch that you reinstall the washer's on post the same way the came out(very important), can't help with scope(been asking the same thing myself) but a good set of peep's an globe from William's an mine stack's pellet's at 10m, if it's a .22 or .177 stick with the mid weight's as they are a power house shooter, mine still hit's 825 with 14.3's, have found some little mod's to help with acc. if you want PM me an I'll pass them along.

The pin closest to the end of the tooth pick going through the rear of the spring housing. is is very loose.
The heaviest I have are CPH's and I shot about 100 last night at 20 meters and it seems OK. I haven't chrony'd it yet.
I can see where this thing would eat scopes bad. It's pretty violent when it hit fires watching through the scope but the
felt recoil is less then my .22's. Neet.

Those are the pins that hold in the trigger group! if its that lose replace it! or try switching them but you'll probly need to just replace it! JMO

cedestech,
The 54 is a very accurate gun and a pleasure to shoot. Big, heavy, accurate, and not at all hold-sensitive. Awkward to cock. Restrain the cocking lever when loading the pellet. Do not trust the anti bear trap mechanism, although mine has been 100% reliable.
Like Mark said, those 2 pins hold the trigger group, AND they also restrain the full load of the cocked spring. They are between you, and having your jaw broken! They should be a tight fit such that they have to be removed with a pin punch while the gun is set up in a spring compressor. If it is loose, it might also affect the accuracy.
Please check this out for the info you need:
http://www.eddiecolwell.tzo.com/RWS-54.htm
Make sure all the scews attaching the action to the stock are snug, including the trigger screws. The detent ball is adjustable but doesn't need any lube. The action should stay put after being cocked, but should easily move 3/8 of an inch or more when fired. Also, there are a couple of large washer shaped rubber pads (inside) at the mounting posts that isolate some of the shock.
Mine is a .22 and thrives on the CPs in a cardboard box.
I see yours has a Picatinny rail. Is that the nice one with the droop compensation and the stop built into the end? If so, you are in good shape. If not, the rail will walk off the gun unless you have a good stop.
I use a Leapers 3-9 x 32 AO and its been on there for thousands of shots and I only recently had to readjust the zero after I knocked it. I have no experience with the Swift scope. If it's not rated for airguns I wouldn't sacrafice it.

Thanks Loyd, It is indeed the droop compensated rail with the end built in to keep it in place.
I was afraid of that pin problem.... I'll need to come up with a complressor and see what is what. It is definantly
"loose" and when the gun is cocked with the lever open I can push the pin out with my finger.
Joy....
FWIW It does seem to like the CPH's I cycled through it last night. This is good because I like buying them and the CPL's at less then $20 for 1250 is nice.
Ed K actually lives right on the other side of town from me and I think I might just walk it over there to him to see what is what....

Best part is he is only about 30 minutes from me. It doesn't make sense for me to try and do it myself.

Darn, having a tuner right in your neighborhood. That is sweet. I bet I shoot my 54 5 days a week. It makes me a better shot than I really am.

THough I have no help for the fix, I did want to congratulate you on the gun. The RWS 54 came for me after the RWS 350 and 48, and it changed my perspective on RWS forever. I sold off the RWS 350 and the 48. I absolutely love the 54, and wish you luck with it... it is what you expect when you get up in that price range: a superior shooting experience.
