Beeman Chief II Plus is Shooting Great, Seneca Domes are Shooting Fantastic !!

Head out to do some more shooting with C III + and Seneca 16.1gr Domes. She is filled to 3000 psi, and the power setting is 1/2 turn in from my 13.43gr Monster setting --- These Heavies need a little more poop.

The first ten shots averaged 798fps and the pressure dropped to 2850 psi. These pellets shoot incredibly well in this gun, I'm smacking stuff 43+ yards out that I normally would not shoot at. What is really amazing is in general the quality of these is on a scale of 1-10 about a 7, some have noses that are a little different, flat spots on noses are inconsistent, and I could go on ----- but the shoot crazy good.

I have shot 20 shots and my manometer is at 2500psi, my average velocity now is 803fps :-) Shot another 5 shots and the manometer dropped to ~2365+psi and my average velocity is now 805fps. It looks I used 635 psi to get these 25 shots, used about 27psi per shot :-).I can easily get the 30 shots I'm after  -----  after that she start losing poop right at the 2000psi mark. If I wanted to pretend she was like one of my Career's I could twist spring tension up to keep the velocity up ... but there is no need for that unless there was some kind of need after 30 shots and I saw something I really wanted to plaster !!

After looking at the figures Lloyd's Sikes calculator, this gun is rocking ...

With this gun in 177 I definitely don't feel any way I'm under-gunned for any pest up to the 8-10lb weight class up to 45 yards as at that range with these pellets I have about 17 fpe !!!

I'm back at it tomorrow !!

I went out and shot some more today, these Seneca Domes in this gun are Boomers !!!

The velocity is at an average of 805+ fps, I can get a lot more, but don't need it. The velocity I'm getting is what I want.

I'm shooting rocks and stuff the size of pill bottles at 35-45 yards and this pellet gets there fast and hits very hard. This pellet for this gun foes it all for me, it's accurate, hits very hard and is available. (I'm surprised the past week I did not buy Pyrimid Air out of these pellets, I have bought MANY).

Can hardly wait to get out again tomorrow morning.

Yes mine is the 3000 psi plus in 177. It came in two days ago but haven’t had time to mess with it. I bought jsb 8.xx , 10.xx and the 13.xx  pellets with it to try out. I will have to try some of the 16 grainers if they shoot well. That would be a hard hitter for hunting. How much did you increase hammer spring over stock setting to get 800 out of the 16 grain pellets?

I turned about 4-6 turns down, other wise I was getting 950fps plus velocity.

I filled it up to 3000psi and loaded 13.43gr Monsters (IMHO anything lighter is to light), this gun is powerfull !

I turned the velocity down till I got ~775 fps and that gave me a bell curve of ~ 35 + shots.

I marked the inside nut you turn with nail polish so I always have a zero. My heaviest setting on the hammer spring tension is 9 on a clock face (this is for 15gr NSA slugs as they need a higher speed for accuracy ~ 810fps). I always turn back the power nut to starting position when I'm through shooting. I always go for a controled velocity bell curve for the ammo I'm using. Velocity and number of shots are important to me !

Wow yours is crazy. I had pyramid air test mine so I didn’t get a dud right out of the box. They only filled to 2500 but mine was only 1004 FPS top velocity with 7 gr hobby pellets so it will need to be turned up I suspect with the heavy ones.

So you feel only the heavy weight pellets/slugs provide the best ballistics?
Have you done any testing with the weights below the 13 weight range, 10.0+ grs range?

I would also have the adjustment range/power as your Chief II, with the Dar.
I was hoping that a good happy medium could be found for the lighter weights, ie;
a dual purpose AG, just turn up or down to get what you need, depending on the situation you are in.

 The only lead that has gone down the barrel of my DAR .177 is NSA 12.5 gr. deadly out past 100 yards, took a possum with mine 1 shot DRT at 50 yards.

Good hunting combination, those Seneca pellets can work in more rifles than they get tried in. 

Might be optimum on the tune, best combination of energy/shot count.

One question (if I read your post right)….why un-set the striker tension after a session?

When it comes to little critters (like pest birds) and short range (like 30 yards), am a fan of lite and fast so long as they are accurate.

Non-expanding lite weight pellets  tend to dump more energy in a short distance than the high BC heavy weights.   Pretty much the reverse of what longer range shooters/high penetration shooters are looking for.

Same reason the low BC pellets loses energy in air travel...they lose it faster in a shorter distance in more dense/meaty media.

With two working chronographs, can set them both up with vertical layer of soaking wet news print between them.   Get the energy before impact, energy after impact, and can find the energy they deposited in the layer of wet news print.


Myself:

I don't care for figs.   Have fig trees, and the old lady behind me loves to make fig  bakes (it's kind of a St. Joseph's Day/Catholic thing)....so if I'm out protecting the figs from pest birds with some light weight, low BC pellet, it's not because I'm ignorant of the advantages of the heavy weight pellets/slugs....it's because the quick energy dump pellets better turn those pests into "puff balls".

The reason I turn back the power setting when not in use is I'm  Soooooo anal about stuff I want the spring tension to stay the same as long as it can. Yes I know I'm crazy !

Same same on this end, only I have to be inside a Big ALUM skinned bldg and I cannot have any sky lites showing........ , outside no problems.

I tested some Galvanized and Alum roofing tin, (25yds) what would barely mark the Galvanized, (Ham 850 Co2/7.5grn wadcutters)
would punch a clean round hole THRU the Alum, same gun/ammo etc...........

I don't think I would have permission for very long and would be up on a hot tin Alum roof,
with a sack full of same diameter screws and tar, fixing sky lites.............. etc.
We only get 5-6" of rain every so often.............

So far, on sheet metal/tin roof or siding...and NOT wanting to make holes..it’s worked out to be more like energy per square inch.  Dents would be OK...holes I have to plug/seal ….not OK.


Thinking about 20 foot pounds when the pellet runs into the sheet metal wall (or roof)….by square inch.

  .177 would smack into the sheet steel at 800 pounds per square inch.

.22 would be more like  526 pounds per square inch.

.25 would be more like 408 pounds per square inch.

Different with steel BB’s (or metal nosed lead pellets)….although I seriously doubt you’d ever make it to 20 foot pounds with a steel BB (or ever want to)….it’s more like “point contact”

Yes, it's a QB trigger and I improved it greatly by reducing spring tension and adjusting sear engagement :-)

My hand pump hasn’t arrived yet. Grr. Did shoot mine several times. I turned it up about a quarter turn. Was only 2k in the gun. Got about 5 or 6 shots before velocity started to really drop off. I got around 800 FPS with 13.43 gr. Pretty happy. Have you happened to hand pump yours? If so how many pumps from 1500 to 3000 ?

Needed to do some ratting around (and inside) a metal shed.   Was OK to dent, didn’t want to fix holes.

 Bottom rusted out of a healthy sided galvanized tub...used the sides as a test bed.

Before I turned it into a sieve, figured out that I was much better off with the slow .25 than the fast .177.

Lost the .22 picture at the same energy level….but as you’d guess, it would usually split the metal, occasional hole it. Split metal would still roof-leak.

Trucker:

Can run it over 1500psi (1500-3000psi) but likely the best shots would be inside of 1000psi...just the way it is with unregulated PCP’s.

Something like 136 cc’s….healthy hand pump...likely close to 60-80 pumps for that 1000psi (more like 80-100 pumps for 1500psi).

Going to just guess yours.  Using the 775fps/35 shots/16gr..  Likely something near 75 pumps to recharge and have another 35 shot session.

Revising that efficiency calculator….thinking energy in vs. total energy out.

Average tuned PCP will get about 10 foot pounds out for every pump stroke in (depending on the pump).  Air-hog might get 7-8 foot pounds out….really efficient one maybe 12-13….so I just use 10 foot pounds out per pump stoke in as “passing”.

Really doesn't matter dhow big the air volume to be filled….just larger numbers of strokes and longer shot counts.

So If I’m getting 750 foot pounds out per fill (about what you are) would expect something like 75 pumps in.   Could be 100 strokes for an air hog, and  60 strokes for a very efficient rifle
