Author Topic: H&N Excite plinking .22 wadcutters - does anyone use them? (Read 302 times))

I've had very good results with the Hammers and I want some wadcutters, especially for my RWS 94.

I would normally look to Meisterkugelns or Hobby but for $4.99 per 250 I'm so very tempted to try these.

Has anyone had experience with then, good or bad?

And does anyone know if they come in a 10 or 12 tin sleeve? If I order from Midway I want to eliminate loose tins in an unpadded box.

Also - I do NOT expect them to group well at distance. I would be pretty surprised if they shot well at 25. 10-15 yards is fine with me.

Pellets lousy in just one gun or multiple?
Tins damaged in shipping?
Still covered in flash?

A little off topic. I used the 177 ones a few years ago when I was on a tight budget. At my old apartment range of only 8 yards they weren't accurate. In either of my Hw30 or Hw95. They were no better than the cheap Crosman milk box wadcutters. I wasn't expecting excellence but I was hoping they'd at least be better than the Crosman. They certainly looked better and fit better, but shot, no better. Plinkers at best.

I was going to answer but Ron beat me to it. I, like you, were looking for cheap accurate pellets, I saw where these were labeled by H&N and I had had good luck with that brand pellets so I assumed they would be better than the cheap Crosman pellets. Go ahead, buy them and see for yourself. But I certainly wouldn't buy but one tin if I were you.

I only ask because I've had pretty good luck with the shallow domed Hammers.
Sounds like the wadcutters are not so hot.

I'll probably buy a tin for S&Gs if I can mix it into a larger order, but based on your feedback I certainly won't be investing in a sleeve...

There are currently two different H&N Excite wadcutters:

The smooth skirt type is already on the second generation. Some of these variants may not shoot too good, but I think that discounting the "Excite" label as a blanket statement without trying them may be a little short sighted.

My experience with them is that they shoot OK out of my tighter bore airguns. In fact, I like pellets that load with the head just slightly snug. Not so tight that they cock over before you can get them fully seated. The smooth skirt ones shoot better than the striated ones out of my airguns.

If your airguns have "loose" bores, these pellets may not work for you.

As soon as I find some, I'm going to try H&N Sport wadcutters and both RWS wadcutters (all in .22)

I will probably try the Excite line if it is convenient.

No competition needs here, I just have a very accurate .22 that I want to shoot clean holes with.

I have several tins of them. ( In .22) and they work fine with my lower velocity spring guns. they are only 12+ grains so kind of light for .22, hence is why they worked well in my lower velocity guns. they were acceptable for plinking, or in my case varment eradication at 25 yards. NOT a target round if your looking for pin point accuracy, but a good all around plinking / varment round for lower velocity pellets

My default wadcutters are RWS Meisterkugeln. They are easy to recommend because they seem to work out of everything (if you don't shoot them too fast). I had two tins of the H&N Excite Plinkers in .22, but I'm down to 1/2 a tin now. They did not shoot so well out of my AF Escape, so I mostly used the Plinkers to send out into space for the suppressor test I did a while back. HOWEVER, I recently took my 13yr old out to plink at my Dad's farm with my Tom West stocked PRod with Geo LDC on it while I did a little work on the boat in prep for the season. I had him shoot'n at one of those orange gopher 'popper' targets at about 45-50 yards, HE NEVER MISSED! (and got board). SO, I found one of those wide Dove bar style Popsicle sticks on the ground (darn trespassers) and set it up for him to try to hit at the same distance he'd been shooting. He NAILED it first shot. So I took a quick pic of the splintered stick with a penny next to it for scale and he said "how about the penny?" To which I replied "ah, sure, go ahead and TRY". Well, somehow he hit it and blew the penny in half! "ok, hotshot, go for the other half" I barked at him. He nailed it too!

So this is not so much a brag about how good the kid is with what I already knew was an accurate airgun, but the pellets work EXTREMELY well out of my PRod out to 50 or so yards. I'd have to do the math for real, but believe they are shooting at least 1 MOA to hit a penny consistently at 50yrd, so yes, we use them and they are accurate IF you find a gun that likes them.

So, despite having bought some .20 & .22 field pellets instead of these, it looks like I need to put these back on "the list". Ah well, such is life... ☺

Yes, I would put the "plinkers" back on your list, at least one tin to test in your airguns. Like I said my AirForce Escape did not like these 'plinkers' resulting in something like 1.5" groups at 25 yards (with flyers) which normally prints dime size groups at that range with other pellets. The Plinkers were also cranking around 920fps out of the Escape, which apparently they did not like, where as at 750-720fps out of the Marauder Pistol they performed as shown in the pics I posted. I also have a video from the shooters perspective and another from a foot away from the penny but the files are WAY too big to post. Amazing sounds; hearing no report, the pellet 'sizzling' in, hitting the penny and it having that tattle tale, buzz of a "classic ricochet" off into the distance. If I can figure out how to cut down the video from this lame laptop I'll post it.

Oh, and despite playing down how well my 13yr old Son shoots, he rarely misses anything at any range with any weapon. It might be time to see if he has any interest in competitive shooting

I'll have to figure out (or have the kid do it) how to edit down the video. It's about 120 seconds of agony waiting for the shot, then it's over.

It would be cool if I could get the pic in pic thing going to show the aiming, then the close up of the hit. Eh, this chromebook likely lacks the ability to make that edit, but I'm sure the kid can figure it out somehow, maybe on his machine. When/if it gets done I'll post it (prob over the coming weekend, we have a LOT going on sports wise).

YES, editing not worthy, not very precise but I did it on the phone.

Anyhow, here it is.

If you play it back a few times, you can barely hear the gun go off, then here the 'sizzle' of the pellet coming in, and of course the penny flying off into the distance. (should probably turn the speakers up;)
