Williams peep sight HW30S

Getting ready to mount a Williams FP AG peep on a HW30S.  How tight do you have to lock it onto the dovetail?  Those two tiny allen screws do not seem like they would take a lot of torque.  Also should it be mounted as far back as possible, I've never used a peep sight.

Just snug everything down and place a piece  of tape infront of the sight. If you notice the sight sliding back snug everything a bit more. If nothing moves than you are good to go. Sight pictures are dependent on the individual so you just have to find the right amount  of eye relief that works for you.

Jeff, you are exactly right about not over-tightening those tiny screws. They strip very easily. I know, because I've done it. The good news is that they really don't have to be super tight. I've had no issues with the sight sliding on the dovetail using just firm tightening.

As tjk mentions, more or less your call as how far back you want the peep, but most peep users like it close to the eye, myself included. Just don't get it so far back on the HW30 as to make it difficult to work the safety. On my HW30, it's just in front of the safety.



Also, since you're new to using a peep, don't forget the simple rule of just looking though the peep and concentrating only on the front sight. Look through the peep and forget it, in other words. Don't try to center the front sight in the peep hole. Your eye automatically seeks the brightest point of light when looking through an aperture and that's the center of the aperture, so your eye does the work for you. The whole idea of using a peep is to take the rear sight out of your sight picture so you only have to concentrate on the front sight and target. Have fun. The 30 is a great gun to peep.

The small screws need only be snug. The inside slotted screw is the real fastener.
What I did was remove the top half of the sight.
Loosen up the two small Allen’s screws.
Place the sight where you want it.
Snug up the small Allen’s.
Tighten up the one slotted screw.
Put on the top part of the Williams.
Try out the settings to your eye.
If all is well, loosen up the Allen’s and put some removable loctite on them and retighten.
I have 3 Diana’s mounted this way with no problems.

Me, too. I'm over in neighboring Wisconsin and we've struggled just to get into single digits for a high all week. Been all indoor shooting for me, this week. By the way, the 30 is the perfect indoor springer.

It's too cold for me too.  It's 32° with a freezing  rain and forecast to get a bunch colder the next 3-4 days.

As for the peep sight; Joanie, the enabler, is spot on.

Here's mine with a a large apature mounted forward.  Makes for acquiring the target quickly.

That's exactly what I did. The grey is the purdy one but the beech with peeps is my favorite. Not only my favorite Hw30 but my favorite rifle period. Powder burners included.

Also a good tip is to keep the open sight on when adjusting peep sight.    Adjust peep to be close to aim point of open sight then take off the open sight.     Takes a lot of guesswork out of where to begin in adjusting peep.    Also safer for guys like me that have an indoor range.    Enjoy!

-As Joanie mentioned the side safety of Weihrauch's means that you have to mount the rear sight in front of the safety button.
With oven sights, the longer you site distance between front and rear, the great accuracy the sights will have. 

-As Duckfish mentions, his is mounted that way for quick target acquisition and not extreme accuracy.

The above is all accurate, but I would like to add that it's sort of a balance between the side allen screws and the top slotted screw. If the top slotted is too loose when tightening the allens, the top plate will be somewhat canted.

My procedure is to run up the slotted screw until the adjustable plate just barely moves under the top plate. Then mount, snug up the allens, and then lastly tighten the top slotted screw, as described above in the quoted post.

Main thing is to not have too much slop on the slotted screw and between the plates before snugging up the allens.

I have 2 Hw30, 2 hw50, 1 hw95 and 1hw85 (which I consider a long barrel hw95). The sets has a Williams sight and the other been scoped.

I prefer iron sights, but the eyes are are getting old.  So I switch to the scope when I get frustrated only to run back to the iron sights when I get bored with the scopes.

Just put AN FP-AG-TK Williams rear peep on my new walnut HW30N. Took a few shots to walk her in at 20 yards, but she shoots really well at twenty and shooting little plastic army dudes that about as far as I can see anyway. Great sight, only had it a week or so, but it’s been working for me. The dudes over at AOA hooked me up and they were right about fit and performance.

Those Williams are excellent sights.

What size ring, and what size diopter are you using?

My preferred is 1" ring and .05 diopter at about 10 meters.

As mentioned above, The adjustable Merit is a nice choice and I may have one on hand, just have to find it, but it's cheaper to just get a few different diopter from Williams.

BTW, those Williams FP-AG's were out of production for quite some time a few years ago, and, I may say, The Williams people were not very customer friendly, at least back then. I scored up as many of the FP-AG's as I could back then, say, four or so years ago.
