We actually had a real remote for our TV when I was that age and it didn't take batteries. You could only go 1 direction so if you missed your channel you had to go all the way around to get to it and it didn't control the sound.

I remember that type of remote.  But the upside with that remote was there were not many channels when you needed to go around all of them.

We actually had a real remote for our TV when I was that age and it didn't take batteries. You could only go 1 direction so if you missed your channel you had to go all the way around to get to it and it didn't control the sound.

  Our 1948 Admiral you could shake your keychain in front of it and it would change.  Only had to go 12 channels cause the UHF had a side box and had to set the tv to channel 3.  No remote for the box

In my day the term "REMOTE CONTROL" wasn't in the dictionary. We called it a "Clicker".

My great grandmothers Zenith TV had a 'clicker' with a single button, no volume control, just channel selection up. 2, 4, 5, 9 & 11 were the local stations.

I think my families first TV was in 1963? I know it was a 13" Black and White GE, my older brother has that TV and it still works. One job he had in the 70's was as a TV/VCR repairman, I don't know if he ever had to fix the little GE TV though. He keeps it as nostalgia. My grandma and grandpa had a HUGE color TV as far back as I remember, which I enjoyed when I visited them, if the program was broadcast in color,  .

That's what we had. It used a tuning fork to change the channel.
